Go's model of culture as a "semiotic system-in-practice" is interesting inasmuch as he tries to walk a line between structuralism and discourse, but the book is highly repetitive, and fails to make up in depth what it lacks in breadth. Also, I effing hate reading sociology.

** spoiler alert ** Man, this book was weird. I like weird SF, but this was something else - I expected more of a resolution at the end, or for me to develop a better understanding of the point of the AI fight. Maybe it hasn't aged well. Meh. Give me Charles Stross any day.

I thought "The Prince" was a brilliant book. I love Machiavelli's style of writing. He is to the point and illustrates his point with many examples of previous and current rulers such as Cesare Borgia and other ancient rulers such as Moses and other Greek and Roman princes. What is fascinating is that he covers all aspects of being a prince, from how to rise to be a prince, whether a prince should be feared or loved, military strategy, and many other topics through his political theory called Realpolitik. I gained a huge understanding of Renaissance style in which I learned many quotes from other well known Italian writers such as Petrarch. The Prince teaches many good lessons and is overall a great book. Machiavelli's descriptions of his experiences in Florence missions throughout Europe give fascinating details about his life and of 16th century Europe. Overall, after reading the Prince, I gained a huge understanding and hopefully will be able to read this book again at some later time. This just goes to show why Machiavelli is one of the core founders of modern political science.

kids off on adventures under the very eye of clueless adults. Effete, rather sickly (or at least distracted), down on their luck adults, a strong band of kids with a life of their own. E. Nesbit was one of the founders of the socialist Fabian Society and wrote over 40 books, mostly for kids. She is credited as having invented the 'kids as adventurers' genre.

This is an American classic. When I first started the book, I was bored out of my mind. I finally got caught up in it about halfway through, and the ending was totally satisfying. It's rather slow paced, but is also a short read. It's not my favorite book ever, but I was pleasantly surprised.

we can never know what to want, because living only one life, we can neither compare it with our previous lives nor perfect it in our lives to come."

I feel like I say this a lot, but this is another one of those books that really could have benefited from another time or two through editing. Although there aren't glaring errors, the whole thing felt a little rushed, skimming the surface of complex feelings and relationships in a way that felt generic, especially concerning Number Four's first romantic relationship (lots of generic tropes like, "We talked for hours," but never a hint toward exactly WHAT was discussed, or how he manged to talk so much without revealing that he's um, not human, and that all of his life has been structured around that fact.) This is definitely a plot-driven book that strives to be a bit more but that doesn't quite cut it. Luckily, the plot is interesting enough and mostly well-paced. I may be less generous to this book due to finding out this publishing company puts out books with the outright intention that they be picked up and made into movies, but I do think that, although this is just an average sci-fi book, it could make a really good movie. In a movie, the lack of depth given to some issues will be more acceptable, while the potential for stunning visuals can make such a lack feel negligible. And while I don't generally feel compelled to continue a series that begins with a three-star book, I am intrigued enough by the story's premise to give additional books in the series another go, especially with the hope of learning more about Six and the others. And now that my "read-before-you-see" duty is done, I can go to the movie!

I loved this book! One of the best children's books I've read in a long time. Everyone should have a teacher like Mrs. Baker! I highly recommend this book because it was funny, touching, heartbreaking and more all in one story.
