This was a phenomenal novel!! It really made me think about what happens in the afterlife. Ben Sherwood's writing was thought provoking! I haven't enjoyed a book so much in a long time. This is one story I won't soon forget. From the dust jacket: "The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud tells the haunting story of a young man who narrowly survives a terrible car wreck that kills his little brother. Years later, the brothers' bond remains so strong that it transcends the normal boundaries separating life and death. Charlie St. Cloud lives in a snug New England fishing village. By day he tends the lawns and monuments of the ancient cemetery where his younger brother, Sam, is buried. Graced with an extraordinary gift after surviving the accident, he can still see, talk, and even play catch with Sam's spirit. But townsfolk whisper that Charlie has never recovered from his loss. Into his carefully ordered life comes Tess Carroll, a captivating, adventuresome woman training for a solo sailing trip around the globe. Fate steers her boat into a treacherous storm that blows her back to harbor, to a charged encounter with Charlie, and to a surprise more overwhelming than the violent sea itself. Charlie and Tess discover a beautiful and uncommon connection that leads to a race against time and a desperate choice between death and life, between the past and the future, between holding on and letting go."

A quick, enjoyable read. This is definitely like learning history from a gossipy old aunt and although she discusses the Seven Years War, there's much more about court life at Versailles in the time of Louis XV than political wrangling. Broader brush strokes than modern biographies typically use. In a few generalities, she gives us the Marquise's childhood—-what would probably be several chapters of annotated anecdotes in a modern work. Also, because she doesn't list her sources all the time, I had an uneasy feeling she was sometimes filling in the blanks creatively. Tough to know, when a novelist writes history. Still, I'll always remember Louis XV, his mistress, his wars, his alleged personality. That's something I never could keep straight after four years of college.

Weirder than science fiction. Only when writing about the history of mathematics in China would one also write about poetry. Containing an excellent discourse on alchemy and the ruinous quest for the Golden Elixir.

I echo Molly, I thought this book was overhyped. I give Smith credit for doing an outstanding job of conveying the dialects and syntax of a dozen ethnicities in her book. I've seen few authors who are as talented as her in that regard. But at the end of the day, I sort of trudged through the book. It didn't really keep my interest.

On the surface, it seems like I would like this book about an Italian-American woman learning the family shoemaking business and looking for love. However, it just wasn't my kind of book. There was too much detail about clothing and room decor--I don't really care that the eldest daughter was wearing a cream wool pencil skirt, a cream cashmere cardigan, pearls, silver bangles on her wrist, and a cream embossed leather shoe with black piping on the vamp. Don't care! The similies and metaphors also seemed like the author was stretching a lot of times. Little Italy looked like ruby and diamond chips in a diamond drop earring? Huh? My other main beef was that I never felt invested in the main character. She was kind of a twit, and she kept talking about how old she was at 33. I didn't care what happened to her, and I found myself snorting in disbelief when, at the end of the book, she said something about how she kept love at a distance. Why hadn't we heard anything about this trait before? Why did I care so little? I guess, if I'm going to have some chick lit, I want the protagonist--and the story--to have some humor and sass and chutzpah. Otherwise, what's the point?

i didn't like it quite as much as his other books-i enjoyed the complication of the story, but if anything he was TOO descriptive for me...maybe i'm in a different "reading mode" these days. still fun complicated descriptive in-depth chabon. and the reference to homosexuality that i've found in each of his novels.

Mildly entertaining collection of magazine essays on architecture. Reasonably advocates that more attention be paid to ordinary, "background", architecture rather than the monumental projects (skyscrapers, museums, monuments, etc.) architects focus on.

Julie brought this one home from the Athens Book Center, and as far as I'm concerned, Gregory Maguire will never top Wicked. The story was very interesting, but not particularly well-written.

Kayak tatilinde Jake ve Zoe çığa yakalanırlar. Dağdan otellerine geri döndüklerinde, herkesin gittiğini görürler. İnsansız. Hayvan yok. Ve zaman çok garip davranıyor.
