Okay, I didn't read ALL of this book, but it made my brain hurt in a good way. I tried to get like, ANYONE I KNEW to read it so I could discuss it with somebody, but no joy. Still, after reading Maureen Dowd's "Are Men Necessary" I kind of want to go back to this for a less stupid perspective on women and culture. I don't agree with everything she says but it's certainly thought-provoking.

A friend recommended this book to me, and it honestly isn't the sort of book I would normally read. It was pretty engaging, and it did echo a little bit of the community we grew up in. That was creepy. Overall I liked it.

I disagree with Shero who has previously posted a negative review on this book here. I can’t admit to being a massive fan of Kyle on TV but I do admit that half of what he speaks about in the book is true. I don’t find this book ‘bigs up’ Kyle per say rather it ‘bigs down’ completely the cultural state of the UK at the moment – something that most of us Brits may possibly agree with. A major message of the book hints at the fact that members of society should take more responsibility in their own lives for their own health, happiness and in making things better. This book is always going to have less appeal to the moral higher-ground who take a personal stance against Kyle but it should appeal to some of us who bemoan certain aspects of law and order and British society. It also charts Kyle’s own rise as a cult/hate figure (something he is under no illusion of) but is not celebrity nor self-obsessed. In my very humble opinion, it does bring much to the table and provides the reader with some common-sense food for thought – whatever their station in life - as a quick and easy read.

I read this a few years ago, and the characters have stuck with me. The story is about a German girl who is a dwarf and always self conscious of her smallness ( and in her view, inadequacy). Interestingly, the author is a dwarf as well. I think I tried to read some other books by this author, but this was by far the best and most memorable.

I listened to this on CDs in the car over a period of a couple weeks and loved it. I find hearing a book read aloud is a very different experience from reading it myself: while listening I tend to revert to childhood and just enjoy the flow of the story, without being as analytical or critical. I didn't even notice the strong Hamlet resemblance until near the end, and didn't worry about all the plot elements that got introduced and went nowhere. I did hate the ending but given that the author was rewriting Hamlet, I guess he felt he had no choice.

I had to force myself to read this book to the end; I was pretty disapointed. I am normally a huge fan of Maeve Binchy's books but found this one kindof depressing. It started with same allure all her books seem to have for me, and had me at one point curious about the outcome. Found the ending not only dismal but also incomplete, she left alot of her story unresolved. Also the main character Kate, ended up getting on my nerves. Not one of her best books for sure.
