A biting and revealing examination of friendship that turns to unhealthy obsession. Have you ever had a friend who clings mercilessly, to the point of creeping you out? Read this book.

I know this book is typically well reviewed and even won the Nobel Prize, but it was not for me. The writing was beautiful but the main character was unbearable (I honestly think it's just me, he wasn't meant to be that way). I felt like he was always walking around feeling sorry for himself and it really got on my nerves. Incidentally, if you have ever read A House for Mr. Biswas (V.S. Naipaul) the main character was equally whiney and annoying. Suck it up already!

In The Commanding Heights, Yergin chronicles the flirtation / infatuation with socialism that swept across the world in the twentieth century and the subsequent reaction toward a market economy that followed. From the New Deal policies in the United States to European nationalism to the Soviet centrally planned economy to the Asian tigers, each system is presented at a level that is informative without being tedious. Then, case by case, Yergin examines (some of) the shortcomings and transition to a system where price rather than government is used to influence decision making. This book is a great broad introduction to world economic history in the twentieth century, but being an overwhelming topic and analyzing it through a single lens obviously leads to some simplifications and generalizations. The conclusion – free markets create more wealth, freedom and innovation than socialist ones – is one that is hard to argue with although particular cases continue to be more complex than presented. Specifically, the reality of some of the “miracles” in the Far East (might Singapore be more centrally planned than market driven?) and the minor re-nationalization trend currently making its way through commodity rich South America are counter to specific points but not general trends. Additionally, situations in China, India and (especially) Russia could all use an update since this 2000 edition was printed. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to those that are interested in the high level push toward a free market that has engulfed the world over the last fifty years and the benefits it has delivered. Many times it is helpful to step back and look at the big story rather than small events and Yergin’s book does this wonderfully.

It felt short... which I guess is expected seeing as its a bridge between the first and last books in a series. The story is still phenomenal, though! Recommended!

I really love this whole series. It's not serious, but it doesnt pretend to be. I think it captures perfectly how pathetic we all were at that age (and sometimes still are). As well written as teen romances can ever be. And very funny.

Though I'm a Claire Cook fan, this one seemed flat and lacked her usual humor. The story was uplifting in the power of friends (especially girlfriends) and reinventing oneself with a focus on what is important in life. But, I didn't feel like I really knew the main character that well and wouldn't we all love 18 months of pay but no work in order to figure out our lives. The ending seemed too easy and unrealistic.

There are a limited number of times and places where the word "razzmatazz" can be used without irony, and this book was not one of them. I loved the subject matter, but the tone of the book is absolutely intolerable.

Incredibly poignant illustration of the life of a man fully devoted to God. In the face of perilous circumstances, Bonhoeffer relied completely on his relationship with Christ and believed in the calling Christ had placed on his life. This book also offers another dramatic glimpse at the extraordinary potential humanity has to love one another in the throws of turmoil. Yet at the same time, Metaxes captures the depravity humanity can revert to when one group of people believes in/rationalizes their superiority over another. I highly recommend this biography.

Hearing about this book, I would have expected it to be fairly pathetic (sorry, Sachar). But then I read a couple reviews that said it was actually quite good, so I decided to read it anyway. And then I read it and ended up thinking it was somewhere in between. Not amazing, but not the awful piece of shameless coasting-on-the-awesomeness-of-the-previous-book book that I originally expected. I think, really, the highlight of the book is something that Sachar does really well in most of his stuff: Telling readers, without being preachy, that they control their destinies. (view spoiler) The point he makes is that you can't let other people tell you what your choices are; you have to think for yourself. I especially like this because, of course, Stanley had very little control over a lot of the physical events in his life. But he did have control over how he looked at and dealt with them. Anyway, based solely on that element of the book and a couple other good "morals to the story" (again, without feeling annoyingly preachy), I would have rated it higher. But for me there wasn't enough other substance backing it up. On the other hand, it's so exceptionally short that it's probably worth the read anyway, if you liked Holes. Rating: G

I like to read this book every two years or so, out in the sun or cozied up inside. Unfortunately I've read it in the tub a few too many times and it's getting a little old. I've done two papers on this book (once in HS, once in college) and almost named my cat Jake and 3 years later almost named my daughter Brett Ashley; it's simply a classic tale of the post-WWI turmoil that changed a generation. If you don't identify with this book, then I'm not sure I can identify with you.
