I have hundreds of unread books sitting patiently upon my shelves. I am a compulsive book buyer. I made myself two pacts. First was to read the books that were recommended to me by my students this past term. Second, was I had to read 10 books off my shelf before I would be allowed to buy another (only exception being my book club's pick.) I walked into my office and this book, halfway down the stack, literally just jumped out at me. I was in the mood for a light read. I can equally enjoy what is so wrongly called "chick lit" along with literary classics. I'm eclectic that way. The book cover inspired my daughter to drone on about needing marshmallows, so that amused me (she's only 3.)--She's eaten half a bag over the past couple of days. As I started reading the book, I began to really enjoy it. The characters were real enough. Koomson has an easy style about her writing. I've rated this book really high and probably unfairly so. I have rated it this high because the book has resonated with me in ways most books never will. Reading along, I found myself in more than 4 different characters. Their stories were in many ways part of my same story, just different details and outcomes, of course. My life has been touched by the themes of this book. It gave words, often very eloquently, to only abstract thoughts and feelings. For me this book was like a very intensive therapy session. Who knew when I was looking for a book to digest quickly, as to meet my goal of reading 10 books before giving into my compulsion, I would close its final pages feeling like a stronger, more whole person. That's the power of reading for ya!

It was nice to o home to Oakdale. It was a fun mystery read with all my old fiends. It was nice to have Nancy as a major player. I wish more of the older charaters had had more than just a mention. Carley, Jack, Henry, and Katie are center stage in this enjoyable romp around the familiar haunts of Oakdale from Snyder pond to Al's diner.
