Felt like this was one of those books, like Catcher in the Rye, that one simply should read. But I'm not finding the characters very sympathetic. So we'll see how long this one stays on the shelf. Not worth it. Finished it, but it was too long and too preachy.

Slow at times but if you stick with it you'll discover a heart warming story.

Good book; classic Agatha Christie. I liked the quote "There's nothing like being happily married, is there?"

I kept finding myself screaming at the main character, Amir. The continual behavior of this character throughout the story drove me crazy. Of course, having the story told by the main character, keeps the reader aware that the story is one of regret, redemption and enlightenment. Though, the redemption is not as sweet as one would encounter in most fictional novels. I found the more true to real life events of the story with lack of full resolution to conflicts and characters... more meaningful than I initally expected. This book really opened my eyes to understanding more about Afganistan. I have been terribly ignorant about it's past, it's people, it's culture, and current state of affairs. I know that this novel doesn't give me the whole story. But, it opened a window for me and has encouraged me to learn more about a part of the world, a culture, and faith that is completely alien to me. I definitly recommend this to American readers. We are quite ignorant and need more insight than media and politics can give us.

I won this book on Goodreads and I learned a lot from it: I hadn't realized that such a thing as "Evangelical Catholicism" existed. Robert Barron, the author of this book and the movement's leader, is well educated in the history of religion and the details he provided about daily life in Jesus's time are fascinating. (his description of the Temple in Jerusalem stands out). So do his anecdotes about the lives of famous Catholics like Dorothy Day and Mother Teresa. But anecdotes are not the point of this book; Catholicism is. Like many educated and ardent believers, Barron writes eloquently about his religion. I'm still sticking with mine.

WARNING - do not read this if your children are named after Roman gods (you know who you are). Although I'm not a prude - even I got a little squirmish at times--being an aunt of children with Roman god/goddess names. These gods really do behave quite badly! Had I not been trapped on a four-hour flight with nothing else to read I might have rethunk reading it -- but instead I finished it in one sitting. It was quite entertaining. And the notion of Greek gods living among us- trying to live 'normal' lives is intriguing: Apollo as a psychic TV host, Artemis as a dog walker, Aphrodite as a phone sex worker, etc. etc. Of course, in the end its the mere mortals who really save the day - and there's a warm and fuzzy moral to the story.

Now I am really wanting to know what happens next! These little novellas do not last long to keep me in suspense because I read through them way too fast. Very interesting stuff. Now Cam and Natalia know too much about Raine. But is Brody in on it and can they save Aiden?

This book is awesome but reading it on the subway (look at the cover) can get you in trouble.
