The ending lost some steam but I loved how intelligent this book was - i.e. the science and history. Worth a read.

I try to reserve my 5-star ratings for books I really think are tops. This one is. Riveting, moving, amazing - made me laugh and feel like crying. It's one of those books that puts things in perspective. Even though it's a bit long, it stays a great read from beginning to end. The author is an exceptionally talented storyteller, as well as an extremely thorough researcher. The details she weaved into the narrative were fascinating. Makes me appreciate even more the WWII veterans I meet through my work. Highly recommend. Best book I've read this year.

Picked thisup because I've had good experience with this author. At one point Coventry muses: "I'm forty and I've never flown in an aeroplane; never driven a car, never, as an adult, been to the theatre or been ice-skating; never played tennis or been to a night-club; never eaten Chinese food in a Chinese restaurant, worn pretty underwear or had a bank account or talked about sex, money and politics in mixed company." Bookczuk is older than 40 and done all but one of the things mentioned, but I'm not sure a book about my life would be as much fun to read! Coventry goes on to say," I'm an ignorant woman. How has this happened? When I was little, I was considered clever; I won certificates for cycling proficiency, swimming and hurdling. And the books I used to read when I was sixteen! Adult books about important issues. Why did I stop reading the books?" See...if she'd had BookCrossing, her life would be different!

I laughed, I cried, and I thoroughly enjoyed these essays. The subtitle doesn't do this book justice--it is such a wide range of women and their comments about their own weddings as well as weddings that they have attended. Really fun and enjoyable.

The title clearly gives away the fact that this isn't a feel good story. However, I love to read of the trials of humans and the spirit to survive that lives within us all. The book made me realize how vital missions and charities are to the survivalhood of many in the world, and makes me realize that perhaps America is really a solace for the war-torn refugees of the world, and we need to keep our borders open to them.

This has been the most eloquent and poignant description of a life with bipolar disorder I've ever read. Its the book I want to give all my friends and family. So much of what she describes is 100% accurate to my experiences but she doesn't dwell on the dark, instead celebrates the ability to change and overcome adversity which so few books do. I think this book could be relevant even for those who just struggle with their own demons throughout life and not just those who are manic-depressive. I've bought a lot of books on Kindle lately, but this one is the one I've finished separately on both my kindle and my WP7. ^_^

I thought I was really going to dislike this book. I thought that I would find Sheff self-indulgent, whiny, and annoying. As it turned out, I did. But it was mitigated by his open acknowledgement of his own weaknesses. A lot of negative reviews of this book missed this about Sheff, I think. He talks constantly about his desire to be with celebrities, for instance, and he comes across as desperate and shallow. And yet, he knows that he is being desperate and shallow, and he tells us anyway. I respect him for that. Sheff isn't a great writer; he does a good job conveying the twitchiness and irrationality of life on drugs, but his word choice is often sloppy and imprecise. I think he could have used a much firmer editor.
