It didn't really get going for me until chapter 6, then I thought oh here's a nice little mystery and where's it going to lead to and then I thought what? what's this? This was a book that didn't know what it wanted to be, so it thought it would try to be everything - and didn't succeed. It wasn't awful, though, and those who like the steampunk genre will probably like it anyway, but this book gave me no clue as to what drives anyone to be a necromancer, which was my main question throughout. I wanted to read the first book of the series, which sounds a lot more interesting, but my library only had this one on digital audiobook titles, so I had little choice. I was hoping for more steam or even punk, but got only fizzle.

Really good read from 4 different character angles. I predicted the twist but even when it came another twist followed. A lot of religous questioning which I normally don't like. But this book doesn't seek to give you answers. Just force you to ask questions. If you don't like religious rhetoric then this book may not be for you. Minus all the religous stuff and its a great story.

I just finished this the day our option period ended and the home sale went through. I wish I'd read it earlier, really useful stuff. I think we did a good job, but the pricing and negotiating sections really would've helped.

I first read this book years ago, and decided to reread it before the Starz series starts. It was not quite the way I remembered it! I had not previously thought of this book as a romance, merely as historical fiction, emphasis on the history, but apparently my memory was at fault! This was most definitely a romance, and a pretty torrid one, at that. I don't think the other books are quite so chock-full of sex, but maybe my memory is at fault again. I don't see how anyone could be that--active--for that many years! I still enjoyed the story, and the premise is intriguing. Thinking about time travel too much is a sure-fire way to bring on a headache, but it is a fun hypothetical situation--especially when a person travels back instead of forward in time and is faced with all the dilemmas of knowing what is coming.

More mature in its storytelling, characters, and themes than its predecessor ("The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"), the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is one of my favorite novels, and a classic in storytelling, to boot. Jim may be my favorite character in any novel I've ever read. His goodnaturedness, undying loyalty to Huck, and superstitious nature make him one of the most likeable and memorable characters I can think of. The genuine friendship that Huck and Jim have is particularly noteworthy considering the extreme racial prejudice that gripped the south during the era at hand. Friendship, betrayal, family and adventure are all themes that are woven together beautifully to create a masterpiece of literature. Highly recommended.

An interesting reversal of typical storytelling, but I found the mini-vocab lessons distracting and annoying. The story felt flat and while I can see its appeal to some audiences, I was unimpressed. Although it was a very quick read, I won't be spending my time on any of the others.
