One of my favorite books of all time. Connie Willis does a wonderful job with history/time travel/ and the human condition. This is a book you have to read a second time to truly appreciate her brilliance.

Ok, so I'm not quite done with it, but in ten pages I'll write a little something or other. UPDATE: I finished it! Ok, so I am pretty sure that Wallace Stegner is one of the most under appreciated authors of the past century. Angle of Repose is ultimately a story about relationships. Of marriage and friendship, trust, respect, and loyalty. Set on the backdrop of westward expansion, this isn't a story about fighting the indians, or the barbarism of the those staking their claims on the territories. There isn't a gun fight or a bar brawl. This is a story about people interacting with people, their expectations, their feelings, their mistakes and their conquests. An excellent read.

This book was first given to me nearly 20 years ago by a friend who had a tradition of reading it every October. The idea was intriguing, so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I've only missed two Octobers since then: 1998 (misplaced it) and 2009 (I had given it away without realizing it was out-of-print). Fortunately, my web-shopping wife found one for me, which I'm guarding like gold. There is a lot at play in this story: the journal/narration style, the rich characterizations of familiar faces, a little HP Lovecraft for seasoning...and the fresh take on Good vs. Evil. The style is masterful, and directed me to more of his work. Which is what every great book is supposed to do. If you can find it...snatch it up. Your October (or, whenever) will be richer for it.
