Can guys actually 'fall in love' at first sight? I haven't read the entire series (only this part 1) so I won't say much about it yet. I'll give it a 3.5 stars for the sexy, hot scenes.

I liked this book, but even so, at the end I found myself wishing that the main character had ended up with her childhood love. That in itself made it not so good, because an author should be able to write in a way that makes you like her charcters (or hate if that is her intention). That didn't happen in this case.

Awesome book. I thought it was writen very well. I couldnnt possibly fathom what it was like to live in Ireland at that time but the author does such a good job in helping you see what life was like.

My cooperating teacher and I actually taught this book to our 10th grade World Literature students during my student teaching this sememster. Mostly, they seemed to appreciate the novel because it is reasonably short, and it has a some action and somewhat of a love story. I appreciate this novel because I think it is well-written, and it gives insight into Chinese culture during the Cultural Revolution under Mao. One of my personal goals is to increase my understanding of the world and history, and while this is a work of fiction, it does help me understand a little more what Chinese life might have been like at the time.

This book is full of rather witty reassignments for place names that aren't being used for much anyway. How often have all of us wished there was a good word to describe a thing, a phenomenon, or a feeling? Isn't the world a better place now that we have Douglas Adams's answer to this puzzling problem? Isn't it nice to know that a grimsby is a lump of gristle that is either in your food through careless cooking or sometimes placed there deliberately by Freemasons? Or that a sidcup is one of those hats you make out of a handkerchief with the corners tied in knots? I don't know about you, but I'm glad to know that someone has done this . . . and on top of that, it's roaringly funny sometimes, prompting a reader to bookmark favorite words and read them out loud to similarly-minded friends. It's got that very typical English "scent" to its language, as well, and the maps in the beginning that get sillier and sillier as you go on are priceless.
