You need to love the odd, mystical, and improbable sides of writing to appreciate this book. Nevertheless, Irving demonstrates his incredible ability to write a flawless narrative and intricate inner monologues using off the wall characters who are just strange enough to adore.

This book chronicles the Kingsolver family quest to eat only locally for an entire year. With contributions from Stephen Hopp (husband) and Camille Kingsolver (daughter) the book is a combination of narrative, recipes, informative sidebars, etc. Though the story of how a family would truly eat locally for a year (i.e., no fruit in the winter for this Appalachian family) is rather interesting, and though my knowledge of edible vegetables quadrupled, at times the prose seemed a bit “preachy”. Kingsolver is obviously passionate about the importance of eating locally, of the abuses engendered by large meat farms or agricultural conglomerates, etc,, and this book inspired me to try and eat more foods grown closer to home. However, I won’t be raising and butchering my own turkeys, nor am I ready to begin making my own cheese. I WILL be more aware of where my food comes from. Thanks to having read this book, I am now obligated to add to my collection of guilty crimes that of eating a banana shipped all the way from Central America (sigh…).

One of my new favorites. I absolutely fell in love with Gaiman's writing style while reading this- I guess I was too young to appreciate it when I read Coraline. For me, this book is up there with The Time Traveler's Wife.

I read this play many years ago and never really took in what was going on too deeply, but now that I am teaching it I can see how intricate the layers are and how profound and universal the message between the lines really is. Mass hysteria, the cult of fear, the rush to put blame on external forces... Its chilling how little we learn from history. This play explores the 17th century Salem witchhunts and mirrors Miller's own experiences in the McCarthy (red under the bed) period. The stage directions are so detailed and yet nothing is superfluous. This is a very well crafted play script...if only the local theatre didn't ham it up so much when I went to see it last month!!

Een pak beter dan 'The Other Boleyn Girl' en gefundenes Fressen voor history buffs & tudor enthusiasts (hey, did I just use 3 languages in one sentence?). Het verhaal gaat over vrouw nummer 4 (Anne of cleves) en vrouw nummer 5 (Katherine Howard) van de verschrikkelijke Henry VIII. De plot wordt verteld vanuit het standpunt van deze 2 vrouwen, én dat van Jane Boleyn (schoonzus van vrouw nummer 2, Anne Boleyn). Het knappe is dat Gregory, hoewel de doorsnee lezer wel weet hoe het afloopt (4 overleeft het, 5 niet, Jane ook niet), er toch flink de spanning weet in te houden. Nu die Gregory boeken in wat mooiere covers steken, en ik zet ze met plezier op de boekenplank.

I guess I'm just not worthy of "classic" literature. I found this book to be boring and I don't think I'm better off for having read it. The character in this book had little depth to him and the story seemed to be written all in simple sentences. At least it was a short read.

Pleased to report that this lived up to expectations! A page turner of a thriller with a fascinating collection of historical details. I have to say that I do not think it was actually any better written than Angels and Demons, the only other book I have read by this author, whose subject matter was just as interesting. It just shows what public hype can do for a novel!
