** spoiler alert ** Hmm, I was really enjoying this right up until the end, even woke up early to finish it, and...?? That was it? Did I miss something? I think Faraday was supposed to be the "Little Stranger", but I guess I wanted more of a "bang" at the end. Is that juvenile of me?

I could not wait for this book to arrive and was very disappointed once it did. The author brings in more characters than is necessary and describes their entire personal history. Though the description of the book states that it is about a flooding of a town in 1889, this vital event does not occur until page 240 (there are only 258 pages in the book). In fact, the flood is only described for seven pages before the narration is projected into 1917. Therefore, there is little room for any resolution to these characters that the author has so painstakingly described. In addition, the introduction of the characters seemed contrived and almost appeared as character sketches as opposed to three dimensional people. Possibly more upsetting, is the fact that there is potential in this novel to be an epic in historical fiction. However, in its current state, it falls short. www.iamliteraryaddicted.blogspot.com

This book started off really good, but then it ended kind of lamely, hence the lower rating. Before I started reading this, I thought this was a cut and dry fantasy book about Arthurian legend. Well, it was about King Arthur, but the premise was actually quite interesting. Instead of taking place in medieval england, this book takes place in the modern day. The grail is actually a cup-like stone that has the power to heal any injury, and in effect, grant the bearer immortality. Up until now, that immortality has been in the hands of a psychopathic killer, who has been alive for millenia. Hal, an ex-FBI agent, runs into a boy named Arthur, and the King Arthur legend gets a new twist. Like I said, I really enjoyed this, except I thought the last 1/4 of the book was pretty slow and the ending was not as good as the rest of the book. Still, for originality and keeping me hooked until (near) the end, this gets 4 stars.

I think this book really drilled home the point that conventional discipline does not work (and can actually be counterproductive) for explosive children, and the importance of teaching them skills to adaptively handle their frustrations (as opposed to trying to teach them through consequence). The book is definitely geared more for families with older children who can communicate their feelings, but as a mother of toddlers, the real-life examples depicted in this book made me realize how important it is to start teaching them the necessary skills at an early age. Unfortunately, the author used the same few examples of explosive scenarios throughout the book, so someone looking for a variety of examples and how to approach them may be disappointed. I plan on keeping this book, as I feel there will likely be a need for me to refer to it in the future, but I have actually received much more applicable information and strategies from other books regarding explosive, spirited, or strong-willed children.
