Surprisingly good given the subject matter. Its a heroic epic from the point of view of rabbits. I'll read it to my kids some day.

Not an in-depth history by any means, but a good way to get an overview of the diverse history of India, as well as the culture and religions.

After about 1000 pages in this series, I must admit I got tired of all the side stories of everyone our main characters came in contact with-- Other than that I enjoyed the plot. Looking forward to the release of book three.

my first tom robbins book. a pretty good story, and his use of language is like nothing i've ever read. not the best book in the world but good enough that i'd like to read another by the same fellow.

Not to sound like a snob or anything but this was the first bit of genre fiction I've read in about 10 years. I picked it up after watching red riding on channel 4 and was pleasantly surprised. It's all very fast and brutal, and if you read it quick enough it feels like you've been assaulted in some way. Highly amusing to see west yorkshire given the noir treatment and strange for me, given that I live there and pass through a number of the book's locations on a daily basis.

I've heard that some people are raving about the movie based on this book. I think the odds are less than one in a million that the movie is as good as the book. This author can write and tell a story! The story needed to be told.

So unbelievably heartbreaking!! An amazingly written love story with a mixture of loss, refinding love, losing love again and of history and destiny. For a debut novel, Jonathan Hull has done an incredible job. I'll be looking for more of his work. From back cover: "Patrick Delaney was just a boy when he marched off to war in 1918. But on the stark battlefields of France, amid the horror and the chaos, Patrick forged a bond that would shape the course of his life. Daniel was Patrick's best friend, his comrade-in-arms. But it was Daniel's lover Julia, who would change Patrick forever. Julia's letters, shared by Daniel in the muddy trenches, touched Patrick in ways he never could have expected. But years would pass before he finally met her at a war memorial in France. There, on a field still scarred by battle, Patrick closed his eyes in silent prayer and opened them to the woman he had never seen but always loved: Julia. After a brief, passionate encounter, Patrick made a fateful choice and Julia slipped away, perhaps never to return. It is just the beginning of an astonishing story that will span almost a century, a story of memory and desire, history and destiny-and of the people who slip from our grasp only to hold us forever."

This one deserves 4 1/2 stars. I've never really thought of Sachar as Konigsburgian (yes, I just made up an adjective), but The Cardturner is definitely an E.L. read-alike. Funny, quirky, and extremely smart, this book about bridge may be a little too esoteric for some. But for those who do pick it up, Alton is an extremely appealing narrator, and Trapp is basically a perfect character: curmudgeonly, funny, with layers that are revealed as the story unfolds. The interactions between Alton and his stud-muffin best friend, Cliff, was spot-on, and I can report this from prior experiences (having been friends with some Cliff-typed dudes in high school). For anyone else who has read this: did the book make you want to learn to play bridge? Because it did for me.
