The book opens with the disappearance of Wendy White, a young 19 year old waitress from her rural hometown in upstate New York. The police don't seem very interested in investigating the crime, and the local reporter (and outsider) Stacy Flynn becomes obsessed with finding justice for Wendy. The other storyline is the story of 15 year old Alice Piper, and her untraditional upbringing by progressive, liberal parents. The chapters are short and alternate between different characters' POV. This story is brutal as Wendy's dead body is discovered and Alice undertakes a shocking revenge against the sexist society she lives in. Dark, disturbing novel about environmental destruction and violence towards women. The multiple narrators and the jumping around in the story made it feel choppy and hard to get into. The characters were not developed well, even the two main characters I didn't feel I knew very well. In my opinion, the author spends too much time with minor characters--Alice's parents and Constant and Michelle. Instead of being able to focus on the main topic, the book deals with the industrialization of farming communities, dirty pharmaceutical companies and their human testing, urban flight, and rural poverty. It's too many issues and the book lost its focus. There was a surprise ending, but even that was not explained very well, and I'm wondering really just how plausible Alice's actions were.

I don't think there's really anything to say that hasn't been said about this book. The Lightning Thief reminded me that there is no such thing as 'getting over' the children or young adult genre. The minute I opened this book I knew I was going to finish it. It hooked me really fast, I wanted to know everything about Percy, Grover, Luke and of course, the Gods since page one. The premise was fantastic and I'm glad someone like Rick Riordan, a great storyteller, came up with it AND wrote not one, but a series of books. The reason I started this was because everyone (really everyone) loved it and I just had to see what the fuss was all about. Percy Jackson is a problematic twelve year old who gets kicked out of school every now and then. He suffers from dyslexia and ADHD but soon discovers there's more to life for him than SAT's and school work (lucky guy). I really liked Percy, he was sarcastic and impertinent, and yes those are good traits in my book, and I loved how he connected with Grover and Annabeth. His scenes with Poseidon, even though subtle, were perfect. The only thing that irked me was that fight scenes happened a little bit too fast for my taste, and also everything was solved just like that. You know, stepping on the pearls, falling off a bridge, etc. I wanted more of the crisis stage of the hero in this. All in all, great book, don't just ignore it because it's children genre. I mean, Harry Potter is children genre and we all know how that went. PS: I watched the movie before reading but now that I have: holy gods what the hell was that
