This came as a "First Read" from this site to me. I enjoyed the stories of how these "girls" stayed friends for over forty years. Friendships need to be valued and these "girls" were great examples. I found it very interesting that they traveled from all over to attend the reunions. Well worth the time to read!

this book, to me, feels like playing pretend on a huge wonderful scale. it exists in the most real way in the world of imagination. and it is so blissfully long! i don't really want to finish. update: okay but now i did finish, and i was not disappointed. In a lot of ways, I was reminded of Harry Potter in the scope and magnitude and level of imagination and complete definition of an unfamiliar world, except The Children's Hospital soared over all of Harry Potter's weaknesses, and doesn't give you a slightly dirty feeling that you're enjoying it a bit too much. What I found most compelling about the book was the power and beauty of the smallest moments. Things that I had never even articulated feeling are described in such a way that I was sure that the human experience and my own childhood experience is in so many ways universal. These moments were beautiful and tragic and wonderful, making the characters so intimate and real. My only complaint is that the ending was awfully clean and turned the whole journey of the book into something extremely logical and linear. It fit, it definitely fit, but it was almost too tidy. When I finished this book, I opened back up to the first page and started right over again. It was that good.

This is a really excellent book if you want to know more about how to pick the best ingredients for cooking--what to skimp on and what to really indulge in. I wish there were more recipes and I'm a big fan of pictures with recipes--so that's why it doesnt' get 5 stars.

This book was...painful. It had all the set up to be everything I love in a sci-fi book... natural disaster wiping out humanity, GMO people, and all that other fun stuff. Somehow it managed to be among the more boring books I've ever read. The book dragged on and on with no action until the last 1/5 of the book where suddenly things started to happen and just as quickly ended. No big excitement. Blah.

I really like this book, it showed so much more behind the scenes from the film and it made me understand what it took to make the film. I loved reading about everything and going into the lives of the actors and crews. I really want to watch the movie again and I just love everything about it!

Excellent description of the men's confinement and what their families were going through as the media circus spiraled out of control, and I especially enjoyed hearing about the truly amazing efforts by other governments and private industries that worked with the Chileans to find a way to get the men out. But in some ways the book felt rushed -- a little more time spent with the men after their rescue and after the proverbial dust settled would've made the ending feel less abrupt. Still, an interesting and sometimes emotional read.
