1968 Newbery Medal Winner I could tell this was a bit dated by now, since Claudia mentioned petticoats at some point. Although I guess someone on my Facebook feed was just talking about borrowing a petticoat. Hmmm... Overall, I think kids would enjoy this story more than I did. The story focuses on Claudia and Jamie, a sister and brother who run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and hide there for about a week. They discover a new statue called Angel that was sold to the museum by a Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. The story was well-written and had a lot of funny moments, and all of the plot strands tied up nicely. I couldn't really empathize with the kids, though. They were kind of stupid not thinking that their parents were going to freak the hell out about them running away without giving a clue where they were going. They were also kind of stupid about the letter on the base of the statue being a clue that the museum staff wouldn't have seen already. Maybe naive is the right word, not stupid, but still, it didn't make it very entertaining for me as an adult. I think out of the Newbery titles, I've been more interested in the stories about kids that have to tackle adult issues, or the ones that are truly inventive and complex like When You Reach Me. The conceit was interesting, though--the story's written with the voice of Mrs. Frankweiler, who's writing to her lawyer explaining about the children's exploits. The lawyer turns out to have a less than random tie to the story as well, which was cool, but not enough to make me really enjoy the book as a whole.

Once you've read Dan Brown, you kind of now his tricks: which characters are good, which ones are bad, what way the story is going to twist, convenient coincidences, etc. Despite that, and the fact he has some cheesy moments, Digital Fortress was still an entertaining read. Brown kept me going with great, interesting details and information, and his plot was thoroughly fun to take a ride on. Once again, like all the other Dan Brown novels I have read, Digital Fortress was not a great novel, but was a great light read!

I adore Ann Coulter. She says it like it is. I learned a great deal from her book. She tells things in a humorous way. She is a crack-up!

This opened my eyes to how many troubles a child might face in a day of school. It inspires me to ask my children more questions about their school days and to be more sensitive when they seem to be having a tough day.
Primal fears, ancient legends, and modern neuroses combine in a modern faerie tale... that's really about identity and acceptance (accepting yourself, accepting others, and being accepted). Creative, funny, insightful, and dark; it's magic, in all sorts of ways.
