Like a lot of people, this was my first exposure to Kurt Vonnegut. Although this is not, by far, my favorite of his works, it is a great place to start, because unlike most of his fantastical journeys, this one is based in World War II. My favorite element to Slaughterhouse Five is how Vonnegut writes himself into the book in the first chapter. Vonnegut is always worth readinf, if only to see how to get away with breaking all of the "rules of writing."

2nd Reading, Feb '13: I'm still hovering between a 3 and a 4 for this one. There are a few things I love: the characterizations are excellent. Ares, in particular--how could you not love his brash, out-of-touch idiocy by the end of this story. How can a character I know nothing about suddenly become my favorite Avenger?) Cho's art is gorgeous, and the color work accents it perfectly. The plot is solid but not quite revolutionary, and there are some things I'd like explained, but it certainly isn't boring. My only serious complaint is the thought bubbles. I don't know if Bendis was trying something new here, or if the letterers got out of control, but following every word bubble with a snide thought bubble gets annoying really fast. But, other than that, an above-average (but not great) Avengers story. And, oh: the "picking the team" portion of the book is now one of my fave Avengers moments.
Poison was a quick read not only because of the big print but because the story moved rather quickly. I did enjoyed it, it was an interesting twist on fairy tales, the only downfall was I had predicted all the major twists in the story line... The story was full of emotional and physical trials Poison had to overcome to discover her place in the Realms. The relationships that grew between the four major characters, and the cat of course, carried the story along, well that and Poison's determination to secure her free will and protect those she loved.

Fictionalized account of true story of the 1st “commoner” to marry the Emperor of Japan, and the miseries to which she was subjected, in essence a prisoner of court traditions and rituals. Sad; very interesting.

I lost the narrative thread for a little while but it didn't matter. Hardboiled Hippie Detectiving and more. My favorite thing: Hippiphany-discovering the meaning of life while under the influence of hallucinogens. My 2nd favorte-referencing Cal Worthington!

I only bought this because John Barth blurbed on the cover. He lied!

** spoiler alert ** A pretty good novel, however the ending with Philippa sleeping with her adopted father was a bit much for me.

This book was a mixture of 'The Uglies' and 'Hunger Games'. It had a good flow and kept me turning the pages. I ll probably read the next part of the series. The love triangle reminded me of the hunger games and the society that they live in was similar to the uglies series. Still like it mostly for the flow and the characters were interesting and relatable.

A skimpy four stars, but still four stars. Good, readable book that's definitely worth reading if you have any interest in Wendy Wasserstein, Mt. Holyoke during the late 60s and early 70s, or NY theater since the 1970s.
