Full video review here http://mysterythriller.tv/ancestor-by... I like Scott Sigler’s blend of action and intelligent plots. Ancestor is almost like Crichton’s Jurassic Park in that he investigates genetic engineering and how that could go horribly wrong in the pursuit for profit and scientific praise. I really enjoy the learning side of a novel and in this we get some scientific detail about genetics woven into the tight plot. It’s not too technical but enough that you can appreciate the research. Sigler also writes gore really well and some of his other books are definitely horror. This book has some gruesome scenes but not so much you have to skip pages. Genada is out to clone the perfect ancestor animal whose parts could be used for transplant into humans, a docile herd animal easy to control and harvest from. The setting moves from a mobile lab to a tiny island where the scientists are trying to finish the experiment. The constraint of the setting is critical for the plot. When the aircraft containing the pregnant cows crashes back into the island, we know things are about to get ugly. The ancestors are not docile cow-like creatures at all, but ravenous, intelligent, killing machines. The fight also turns inwards as the survivors of the ancestor attack fight each other in order to keep the company secrets and to stay alive. The characters are a mix and there are enough introduced so that they can be killed off in quite gruesome ways. I especially liked Jian, a brilliant geneticist but definitely mentally ill and her nightmares of horrific spliced animals gone wrong foreshadow the coming events. The insights into her mind as the architect of the final solution are fascinating. The love interest of Sara and Colding gave an extra facet to the sub-plot and humanized some of the feelings behind the violence and the science.

Just heard I had won. Haven't received yet. 3/1/11 Received last night and started this morning 3/10/11 It was a good story, but there were some things I really didn't like. First, normally there is at least one person in a story that I like. This story has so many characters you would think one would be likable, but no. There were a few it took me longer to dislike or hate but what a bunch of selfish egotistical prats. :) I guess royalty was like that back then, but who knows. I won't write specifics here, because anything I say will spoil the book for you. It was an interesting story and some of the characters interactions seemed realistic and human, but then others.......

Amazing memoir, totally suggest it. A true multidimensional book on her life.

I loved the memory keepers daughter, so i was excited about this book and for that reason I read far longer than I normally would have hoping it would pick up. . .it didn't. The narrative is tedious (I did this, then I did that, then I sat for awhile, etc) I never really felt anything for the main character and I found the family mystery she was trying to solve not very interesting. I'm moving on to something else. I'll still try this author again though because I know she has it in her.

I really wanted to love this book (as I do both Summerland and Kavalier and Clay ), but alas it was just not to be. It is quite entertaining and I certainly recommend it as an interesting and enjoyable story to read, but it was definitely missing something for me. It somehow felt as though Chabon was trying to just a little too hard. . .

The writing is at turns interesting and pompous, leaning mostly to the pompous. The book also has some factual errors about the Google book scanning project, which weakens the critique, but only if you know the details. Mostly, this ended up being an annoying effort to show off the breadth of reading by this writer.

This book opened my eyes to things about southern California I knew nothing about before. It has been years since I read this book, but many of the 'vignettes' about different geological formations in the area still stick in my mind to this day. I think of this book every time I drive by the "Wind Gap" along Highway 5 just north of the Grapevine. This book is best brought on road trips, and used to experience the geology of Southern California firsthand.

My memory might be a little jaded because I was forced to read this book in the 8th grade but after the other great stories we read that year (To Kill a Mockingbird, The Outsiders) I was just disappointed with this book. It's supposed to be one of Hemingway's best but honestly I'm not much of a fan.
