I read this all in one sitting on the train home from college. It's a nicely ironic take on a fairy tale; full of all the traditional motifs you would expect in a story of this nature, and a very predictable ending, but with the darker twist you've come to expect from Gaiman. I thought the scene at the end between Yvaine and the oldest witch-queen was quite a nice touch. I must admit that although I love the Sandman series, and really like American Gods, I'm not the huge fan of Gaiman that most other people on my flist seem to be. His characters always seem (to me) to be 'just' characters. They never truly come alive for me, and always seem to be slightly flat, no matter how much fine detail he puts into them. They're a little too obviously repositories for all the wonderful story ideas and ironic thoughts he has. Stardust is no exception to this; when you couple this with the fact that it's not as imaginative or as inventive as, say, Neverwhere or American Gods are, I would put it on the lower scale of his works. Of course, the lower scale of Gaiman's books is still much higher than most of the pap that is currently being churned out, and I would still recommend it highly.

Some days, you read a book for the exact mood you are in. This one may not be a 5*'s but it was perfect for me today.

This book is filled with bits and pieces of romance, laughter, and of course Penderwick charm. This book only made the series better, and I look forward to reading the 3rd (and hopefully not final!) Penderwick book! Wonderful & delightful read, I would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. :)

I read about 20-25 of these books. I read them in fifth and sixth grade. I strongly remember wanting to read these because they seemed cool and my older sister read a few of them. I remember that our library had a little display of them and I also bought a lot of them through the book catalogs we got at school. I remember most strongly the set up of the books; each book started explaining the club and describing each of the members. I also strongly remember the covers.

I liked it, a little different in the the first part getting into it, but once it got going it was really good. It was one that you just read nice and slow for the heck of it.

Got this because I loved Of Mice and Men so much but just can't seem to get through it...

This is an excellent short novel dealing with AIDS awareness, more specifically examining personal responsibility and social issues. At first glance it's somewhat similar to his earlier story "Carcinoma Angels," but is much more detailed and thought-provoking. The narrative switches between four interesting viewpoint characters, seeking sense and redemption in situations that overlap and resolve convincingly. It's a challenging, intelligent book; hard-hitting despite being short and fast-paced.

In this fourth offering from Cathy Lamb, Stevie Barrett had a heart attack at age 32 at the amazing weight of 320 pounds. Now, two years, a divorce and 170 pounds later, Stevie is struggling to find herself and emerge from the painful past that caused her to eat her pain and try to lose herself and her past in food. The book also follows the journey of some of Stevie's friends and relatives, who similarly struggle with their painful pasts and their fears about the future. The journey to a new Stevie is fraught with peril, as Stevie has to revisit some truly tragic incidents from her past and also confront some of the monsters from her present. She, along with her cousins Polly and Lance, are wonderful people with serious issues and Cathy Lamb tackles those issues in a way that makes you want to stand up and cheer. At one in the book, Stevie finally confronts a family member who has mistreated her since she was 11. I literally jumped out of my chair and did a silent victory dance -- it was that moving. Cathy Lamb has fast become one of my favorite authors. She is enitrely unique in her ability to tackle incredibly difficult, painful subjects in a way that is genuine and heartfelt and gut-wrenching but without being too depressing, maudlin or trite. Her characters are always quirky and amazingly full and real and the books are filled with as many funny moments as painful ones. You don't just read a book by Cathy Lamb -- you consume it, and it consumes you. As with her other books, I simply could not put this book down and, when I finally finished it, it took a moment to get back to real life. Her books pack a huge punch and are utterly, completely unforgettable.
