This was a very well written mystery. I did figure out the subtext which led to the plot, was a bit amazed to find out the "whodunit." Very, very good read.

I was skeptical at first. Here was the sequel to a book that needed no sequel. But Metallic Love was a pleasant surprise. The story takes place eleven years after the conclusion of The Silver Metal Lover, and the story is darker and more sinister. Some of the characters from the earlier book appear, but they are not precisely as you remember them. The protagonist now is not Jane, but the poor and rough Loren, abandoned as an infant by a drug-addicted mother. She is caught in a web of lies and half-truths, and she can't be sure where to put her trust. The robots are more dangerous and frightening in this book, and they have begun to return man's antagonism. The book deals with some of the same philosophical questions as the first book - the soul, God, the fall of man, death, and man's imperfection as compared with machine perfection. There is a mystery here involving Loren herself, the META Corporation and its god-like robots, and there is a brooding creepiness that will keep you wondering until the end who is lying and who is telling the truth. If you read and enjoyed The Silver Metal Lover, I recommend the sequel.

This novel is about the Igbo culture in Nigeria and how European culture comes to destroy their seeds and their customs. The intrusion of the white man in Nigeria and how they tried to impose their ‘leprosy’, their beliefs and systems of government in Nigeria. Like leprosy, they were spreading throughout Africa, taking the culture away from Nigerians and dissolving it into Christianity or other European forms of mission. Therefore, the white man was seen as horrible men, who wanted to take away the culture and destroy it. Okonkwo, one of the main characters in the book and the one with who the book is introduced, is best exemplified in his vulnerability towards an effeminate and weak attitude. One has to take into consideration that Okonkwo was a man who despised his father, and wanted to present himself as a man strong enough and rather masculine. For this reason, Ikemefuna (ironically not one of his sons) came to be one of the most important persons in Okonkwo’s life both as an individual capable of demonstrating an invincible strength and masculine ‘attire’, but also as a son. Okonkowe admired Ikemefuna’s ability to bring in that masculine and strong aspect to the family, for he would teach important things to Nwoye, things which Okonkwo considered to give men a great potential and spiritual strength. After Okonkwo decided to plot against his own adoptive son, Ikemefuna, Okonkwo fell under great consternation, sadness and incredible guilt.

I loved the Garfield books when I was in the early elementary school and practically learned to read from them. At the time I really never understood how Garfield and Jon communicated.. now its obviously some type of psychic projection. Since Im such a Pisces, I never liked when Garfield was mean to Odie, it made me sad. It was one of the many moments that set the stage for my bleeding heart nature. Also, the early books had Jon with some strange mustachioed room-mate or something (now, it's obviously his swinging partner). If I remember correctly, in the earlier books Jon was always "dating" some chick and of course Garfield would deliver a devastating analysis and/or maxim about the futility of the modern dating scene. Nowadays, last I saw, it's all about setting up for the last panel where Garfield says from under his blanket "I hate Mondays." Also, I was fascinated with how a cat could engorge an entire pan of lasagna IN ONE GULP. It's taken me 29 years to work up the ability to do that and I'm 6'5". Fascinating.

I was really excited to read my first Edna O'Brien novel; I have only heard positive things about her work. Perhaps, I should give this book more accolades, but I really didn't connect with any of the characters and the psychopath was so schizophrenic that it was really difficult to follow his point-of-view chapters. It was a somewhat lackluster experience.

Biography by a political scientist and a historian, not a communist or a capitalist. Sometimes harsh but usually fair.
