In listened to the audio version, and it was fantastic. I was stunned when I realized it was the author reading -- he was over the top! Then I read his bio, and realized he is probably the most famous guy I never heard of. In all, a good kid read. Not deep, but way fun. Especially as an audiobook.

Lowell has a weakness for bucolic poems about sunsets, apple orchards and babbling brooks, and tends to neglect the overripe and ostentatious aspects of Symbolism and Decadence that I love. However, this beauty slipped by: "Ursula" by Remy de Gourmont Griffin of the North, sacred beast come in the blue light of a boreal dream, Ursula, snow-flake drunk by the lips of Jesus, Ursula, red star to the purple tulip, Ursula, sister of so many innocent hearts, whose bloody head smoulders like a carbuncle in the circle of the arch, Ursula, ship, sail, oar and tempest, Ursula, flown away upon the back of a white bird, Saint Ursula, bear our hearts away to the snows. Four stars because it offers rare translations of Verhaeren, Samain, Fort, and especially my much-loved de Gourmont and Jammes.
I was hoping for more of an account of Mrs. Vreeland's work life and instead it was an "as told to" collection of incidents of her past. It was an interesting picture of what life was like in the early 20th century, but not enough information about her career.

This book was suggested to me by Mel, my German friend. We have a sort of transatlantic book club going on and she was really surprised that I had never even heard of this book, or the movie that was made from it! This book is a collection of letters between an American Woman and the employees of a rare book shop in London. The letters span from the late 1940s to the early 1960s and as someone who loves writing and receiving letters, I found it incredibly interesting to read the correspondence of complete strangers (that's my inner snoop talking!) By the end of the book I felt like I knew the letter writers like my friends.

WOW. I have never cried so hard reading a book in my life. The ending is completely unexpected and makes you ache. Picoult does an amazing job presenting the characters so that you fully understand where they are coming from in the debate the book circles around. Hands down, the best Jodi Picoult book of them all.

Really good! If you liked Little Women and can handle Civil War violence you'll like this one.

Right from the start you know it's going to end badly. But it's one thing for someone to tell you so and another thing to feel it deep down in your gut, with every beat of your heart and every turn of the page. The story is told from the alternating characters perspective. Laura the reluctant farmwife, her husband Henry, his brother Jamie damaged WWII bomber pilot, and then husband and wife black sharecroppers Hap and Florence, and finally their son Ronsel a retuned WWII tanker hero. Jamie's relationships with Ronsel and Laura bring the impending disaster to a head. Hillary Jordan's writing is beautiful. I felt that I was standing right there with the characters as the events were unfolding. I highlighted more passages in this book than ever before. Two of my favorites are from the beginning of the book and both from Laura.... "The world was on the other side of that bridge, the world of light bulbs and paved roads and shirts that stayed white. When the river rose, the world was lost to us and we to it."..."Beginnings are elusive things. Just when you think you have hold of one, you look back and see another, earlier beginning, and an earlier one before that." Two more from the end of the book are from Jaime and Ronsel..."Sometimes it's necessary to do wrong. Sometimes it's the only way to make things right. Any God who doesn't understand that can go *$#^ Himself." ...."That's the ending we want, you and me both. I'll grant you it's unlikely, but it is possible." All of these bring you straight to the essence of these characters. I wish I could write a more eloquent review but I just don't have the words. I can't wait to try something else written by Hillary Jordan.
