These books are honestly my life and Becca Fitzpatrick is my queen! Just the other day I picked up The Dark Divine purely because Becca had given it a good review and of course it was great! October is a long time away but i can be patient :p

I'm reading this right now and it is very well written, but not very uplifting as you might imagine.

I read MAUS in college and it's been staring at me from my bookshelf for months, begging to be re-read. Finished this first volume today. It's just a wonderful book. I was kicking myself for not taking the second volume with me today when I finished the first!

I thought the 'Isis' character was terrible- why is the main female character in this book such a freak?!
Loved it!

I'll admit that I'm not a huge reader of the mystery genre because I usually find that they aren't all that mysterious OR that the solution to the mystery is not as good as the mystery itself, leaving me feeling cheated. And, to be honest, that's how I felt about this book. I felt the story was excellently crafted for the most part and I enjoyed the twists and turns, but the conclusion to the murder mystery I found to be contrived and hard to believe. Worse, I was immensely disappointed by the fact that the mystery would never be revealed to the "public" but hidden away... where is the justice in that to all those women? Yes, I realize the author's point was to show that a journalist sometimes needs to put his journalistic tendencies away and be human, and in his empathy for Harriet Vanger's tragic life, he did just so. HOWEVER, to save one life that scrutiny while preventing the other families affected by the deranged and unbelievable murderer is, in my eyes, the true horror of this story. Finally, I found it interesting that each chapter began with a statistic about the physical abuse of women... and the irony that the protagonist of the story ended up being a bit of an emotional woman abuser, easily slipping under the sheets with countless women because they asked him to and unable to form any lasting relationship with any of them. This particularly bothered me with Salandar who, in her inability to connect emotionally with the outside world, finally made a connection to Blomkvist. As he watched her transform before his eyes and learn to trust him, he should have realized the sexual relationship between them was no longer an inconsequential act for him, or more importantly, her. I find it difficult to "celebrate" the hero of this story when his stock in the lives of the women in his life amounts to zero. Not sure if I'll read the remaining books in this series...

A satirical (but slightly dated) portrayal of the medical residency. Funny in the poke-in-the-eye sense.

First off, some things I didn't like about the book was that their were Faery royals from Shake Spear's books. Like Puke and the Queen, and some others. I don't mind that, and that's ok. I loved the idea of Iron Fey. From the human advancements. But it was pretty good (:

This book provides short essays, roughly 3-5 pages from various people across the country. Each of them writes about their jobs. Each essay is not only different in its author and their profession, but also in what they choose to write on. Some focus on what they do day to day while others focus on the strengths and weaknesses of their job, how they got there, etc. Some of the people hold positions of people that we have interacted with a lot in our lives but probably didn't stop to think about what their career may be like, such as a Wal*Mart Greeter, UPS man, college professor, etc. A good book so far that is providing me with perspective on my own job and also providing a good perspective on how we all treat work differently, some as merely something to make money and others as life itself.
