Any book that starts with a long discussion of the sexyness of perfect ears has a ways to go to make me like it. Reading this because I wanted the Wind-up Bird Chronicle and this was the Murakami that the Greenville public library had on the shelf. I ended up enjoying the story though--for such an odd tale, the pages were surprisingly flippable.

** spoiler alert ** Fascinating book. Throughout it I kept wondering how the story of the main character is going to tie in with the aliens subplot... The answer is "very loosely". The motivations of aliens were kind of vague, probably intentionally. I didn't understand why the Grand Galactics changed their mind about the Earth, and why afterward Nine Limbeds and One Point Fives disobeyed the explicit order not to get into contact with humans... One Point Fives couldn't help but show themselves as they were braking, and then needed someplace to stay as their vessels were overpopulated; still they didn't have to notify, and could have just let the astronomers waste their time trying to figure out what those weird phenomena were.

Volume 3 of The Worlds of Star Trek was not nearly as good as the first two. I did not find the story of Quark on Ferenginar all that interesting, nor was the one about The Dominion. The only part was the section with Taran'atar because it tied into the beginning of Warpath, which was actually a continuing story after The Dominion. Had I realized that I would have waited to read Warpath, since I kept thinking I had missed something when it started out with Kira and Ro mortally wounded right at the beginning.

I think Robin McKinley for "jumped the shark" with this dense novel that tackles incest and rape through this fairy tale which she says is Deerskin but I remember as Donkeyskin. The whole thing climaxes in public miscarriage which was yucky.
