This is a very important book. The Soviet state systematically used slave labor as a cornerstone of its economy. The mass arrests were, of course, based on nothing, but escalated to keep the labor camps staffed. We must remember this. This is why we fought the cold war. The soviets have become something of a joke, but in reality Stalin was much morse than Hitler, although it's difficult to rank evil once you get to the totalitarian excesses of the 30's and 40's.

This was a very interesting book. I liked the insights into the 3 religions he practiced, Hindu, Christian and Muslim. His writing is so descriptive, and they way he set up the story, it felt so real-I was annoyed when I found it wasn't a true story. The ending is very frustrating and disturbing--I was left wondering which is the real story and couldn't' stop thinking about for days, I had to keep reminding myself that neither of them is the real story because it's all fiction! Aagh!

Bear, Otter and the Kid written by TJ Klune was a sweet coming of age story, It starts with a 17 year old Derrick McKenna aka Bear is left with his five your old brother Tyson aka the Kid after their mother runs out on them, the day before his 18th birthday. His friends rally around him, supporting him and helping him through the huge upheaval in his life, but one stood out Otter. Otter who is gay brother of Bears best friend, one night shortly after his mother leaves Bear gets drunk and kisses Otter, from there decisions are made and Otter leaves town the next morning. Bear continues his life taking care of his little brother, and dating the girl he had known most of his life Anna, but then Otter comes back three years later. That is when the story really takes off, causing Bear to reevaluate himself and his life up to this point; it follows him through tough decisions, which if his witty then 9 year old brother didn’t help him with, would have swallowed him. The Kid was by far my favorite character in the story; he seemed to see what no one else could, as well as break a situation down to the bare bones, which his brother really needed at times. This story makes you laugh, get angry, makes you sad, and at times had me on the verge of tears. It is truly a heartwarming tale, about dealing with the obstacles thrown to us in life and trying to make the best decisions, as well as embracing who you truly are. I look forward to reading more from this author as well from the publisher Dreamspinner Press.

This story primarily focused on Rakesh Ahuja, a politician in India, and his wife and one of his many children. I found the marital relationship fascinating. I didn't quite understand his work political issues, but it could have been that I was so intrigued by the marital aspect that I was just phoning it in when he was dealing with the work issues. The son Arjun was interesting but really didn't get a lot of airtime except for his crush on the girl on the bus that he tries to do a rock concert for.

Great read; engrossing, especially if you live or work in the area of the Bronx where this book takes place and you can really understand the context. A complicated rich narrative about the lives of a young woman and the people close to her during the '90's in a drug and crime-infested section of the South Bronx. Real, complicated, beautifully written...a fast read, but one you will remember years down the line.

This was the first book I've read by Murakami and the first Japanese novel I've read. What I was struck by was how familiar 1960s Japan seemed, even though there are supposedly so many odd little cultural differences between Japan and America. The characters were well fleshed out and fully human, even the inscrutable, tragic Nuriko, who is the love interest of the main character. I haven't read many coming of age novels recently, and this is a good one.

A precocious 9-year-old German girl travels through Europe with her parents in the 1930s. Her father is an exiled writer, supposedly about to complete a novel but always fleeing just ahead of agents and creditors. Often the mother and daughter are left as "security" in hotels while the father flees across borders in search of friends or charity. We learn much about the darkening political situation through the eyes of the girl; but her feelings about her imperfect parents were even more interesting to me.
