This is a story about a teenage girl leaving all she knows and moving to California with her Dad and twin brothers. She meets many odd people but none more so than the tattooed and muscular Slade. But is there more to him than meets the eye? This was, in short, brilliant! Very different from what I was used to with the Wingless series. Hope was a strong heroine and Slade was great as the boy with a mysterious secret. Tucker was deliciously odious as was his Dad. When Slade's secret was revealed I was pleasantly surprised and thought, 'Wow, that was different!', and I loved it. Tucker and his Dad had a suitable comeuppance and the ending was just fantastic. A very different, well put together novel by an author I have come to enjoy very much. I totally recommend this as a very enjoyable read.

Amazing, beautiful and haunting. Not to mention disturbing. Makes me feel like I need to keep a vigil around my son at all times so he doesn't get snatched.

Typical Marsh Inspector Roderick Allen of Scotland Yard mystery. One of her earlier ones written in the late 1930's. Plot involves black mail, murder, and associated relationship problems involving the British upper class. There are many issues which need to be resolved in order to solve the mysterywhich leads to many twists.

I've been waiting for a long time for a book about Elizabeth Bathory to come out, and I was very disappointed with this one. I felt like the point was to have us sympathize or at least understand her actions - but I didn't at all. The character was in no way likeable, but at the same time, I didn't hate her either, which makes for a very very slow read! Wouldn't recommend this.

Poorly written but a good introduction to late 19th century black boston.

A gripping read that includes historical detail, violent deaths and spies. So far so C J Sansom, but this one's set in Spain during WW2, not Tudor England. It doesn't disappoint, but I hoped for an uplifting ending, and was left feeling sad. But the way that it ends is far more true to life than having all the loose ends tied up nicely.

I don't remember much about this book, but it was interesting and informative about architecture and art in the middle ages. I was most intrigued by how things were designed to give people a spiritual frame of mind. I think it translates across the board in religions. Good food for thought.

Four stars worth of interesting strong complicated female characters. Alas, only two (or 1.5) stars when it comes to clunky prose and hamhanded plotting. So give it 3 overall. Maybe I should just stick to Branagh's BBC Wallanders for my Scand crime fixes.

This is an awesome book about a man captured by the Spanish Inquisition and tortured by a deep pit with a sinister bottom.
