What defines a successful teacher? That's the question McCourt struggles with during his 3 decades as a teacher, depicted in "Teacher Man." I have mixed feelings about this book. First of all, I don't think he adequately addressed this question, but then again, that question is a monster and maybe it's impossible to adequately answer it. I wish he had spent more time describing classroom foibles and less time depicting his own life. Sometimes I felt he had brilliant ideas in the classroom-- the discussion of "My Father's Waltz" was amazing-- and other times I was offended with all the time he wasted. A lot of his subpar teaching is the result of his teacher education program, and not really any fault of his own, which may be another point McCourt is trying to address, but it's too subtle of a point. Aside from Part 2, which for some reason I found incredibly dull, I breezed through the book. I really liked his writing style of the semi-stream of consciousness. It's not a perfect book, by any means, but it's interesting and extremely useful for any aspiring teacher.

"Marley and Me" is a story about a family who is just getting started and gets a puppy. They go through the everyday struggles of taking care of the puppy and trying to manage their day to day life. As Jennifer works really hard to find a job in Florida where they live, John already has a job at the local newspaper. As they take life day by day Marley, their dog gives them struggles each and every day on something off the wall. As Jennifer tries to get John to get rid of Marley, he just can not do it, Marley is his best friend when he just needs alone time. As their family begins to grow Jennifer gets more fed up with Marleys crazy ways and makes John take her to one of his friends houses. As John is dropping Marley off he realizes how important he is to him and how he really needs him. As the family finally begins to calm down John is offered a new job. John and Jennifer have three children and of course Marley is back with them. As the family moves to a new town and everything changes so does Marley and the family is worried about him and how he acts. As Marley just seems to be getting older John takes him to the vet and finds out how much Marley really means to the family and how important the little things in life are. As Marley gets worse the family takes the time to talk about all the good times they had with Marley. Marley and Me is a good story and tells the true life lessons you learn when you have a dog in your life.

The fifth in the Vampire Queen series. This is the story of Anwyn, human BDSM club owner and Gideon Green, the infamous vampire hunter and brother of Jacob Green. Gideon is a new client in the club who seems to be searching for something deep in his psyche as a submissive, despite being a very dominant male. He is unable to find his place after numerous sessions until he meets Anwyn face to face and is captivated. Not long after, he discovers Anwyn has a relationship with the vampire Daegan Rei, and finds himself repulsed and disgusted, until a rogue vamp turns Anwyn. He and Daegan work together to save Anwyn and shepherd her through her transition into a vampire. I will say first that this was not my favorite of the series, but still very well written. If the other books are considered character studies, this is even more extreme. The entirety of the book save a few scenes at the beginning and the end take place in Anwyn's apartment at her club, and it's not a short book. You have to be willing to go deep into the characters' heads and stay there for prolonged periods of time. Mind you, this is never boring. There is struggle on many levels: Gideon fears what he desires most inside, a need to submit; Anwyn is appalled by her transition and her loss of control over her life; Daegan Rai, a vamp who had previously fallen in love with Anwyn, the human who refused to become his servant, struggles with her new lusts and her frequent transition seizures. What I didn't like as much: I felt that Gideon fell into/ accepted his desires for Anwyn a little to easily at the beginning. More and more I find I don't care for the "love at first sight" device. While falling in love is not always rational, I do like a little time involved in the falling. There was also more formal hardcore BDSM in this book as opposed to the D/s psychological play and lifestyle. What I DID love was the developing need all three characters have for each other, especially between Gideon and Daegan. Some beautiful moments between them. Gideon is big and bad and scarred. Daegan is so intruguing, having allowed himself to have kept a human non-servant as a lover without forcing her submission. Oh, and this is only the first half of the story, which concludes in the next book.

What would you do if you woke up in someone else's house, in someone else's body and had to live another person's life? A 12-14 year old boy would rate this a 5 because of all the teenage angst it deals with. I was hooked from the first page and can't wait to see how Bedford adult novels stack up.
