Mickey DeFalco is a pathetic, yet somehow likable, one-hit wonder in this book by Charlie Carillo. When he was 18 years old, Mickey wrote a hit song about his first love, Lynn. Now, 20 years later, he is broke and moving back home to live with his parents. The story intertwines Mickey’s present with his past as the two seem to repeatedly collide. He gets his old job back mowing lawns. He bickers with his parents as he comes to relate to them as adults and find out they really are interesting people. Most shocking of all is that Lynn, who ran away from home without so much as a goodbye, has also moved back to the neighborhood. Mickey has to cope with the embarrassment of people who are star struck when they recognize him and ask what he is doing now. He does manage to make the most of opportunities when women, who were teenagers when he was famous, throw themselves as him. The song wraps around the story nicely, appearing in the most unexpected places and giving the story a powerful connection. Anyone who has ever had to make peace with their teenage self will be able to relate. One Hit Wonder is a character-driven story with an edgy tone that reveals an unexpected sweetness. The plot was impossible to predict. I really enjoyed reading this book, despite some crass scenes.

I have always had a dread fascination with the demise of the Romanov dynasty, most especially with the Crown Prince and mysterious Anastasia. For a YA novel (which I don't read much of these days, I'll admit) I enjoyed this a lot more then I thought I would. Written from three different points of view (which I found a little distracting because only two were absolutely necessary) Anastasia, Anne, and Ethan (Ethan's point of view could have been left out or combined with Anne's honestly). I think the average teenager would enjoy this mix of action, history, and Russian mythology. Russia's royal family is protected by a secret brotherhood of magicians. When the Tzar and his family are herded down into the basement as sheep to the slaughter, the brotherhood magically compels the infamous, misunderstood Baba Yaga to save the youngest daughter, Anastasia. Ethan, together with Anne, must find a way to save Anastasia, and themselves from certain, mounting danger.

I really enjoyed this sweet book, full of longing -- longing to die, longing to find love, longing to be a better person, longing for a different past. The book was lovely. The characters are compelling and lovable. The book is a bit confusing, but the mystery is revealed at the end.

This book is amazing! I love the fact that there are many different stories all compiled into this one book. Every one of these people experienced the war in a different way and from a different viewpoint. It is truly amazing to see how each of these people dealt with at the time of the war and how they deal with the memories.
