Wow--I did NOT expect to like this book at all--the hard-boiled/noir genre has always given me bad vibes--but I'll have to say that the vibes were all wrong. This book was excellent. I listened to it on audio, which probably added a lot to it, as the reader did marvelous voices--a Peter Lorre voice for one character and a Sidney Greenstreet for another. I just really could not stop listening. I read it for this discussion at the Laurie R. King Virtual Book Club, because the author, Dashiell Hammett, appears in Laurie's eighth Mary Russell novel, Locked Rooms.

I was a little hesitant to jump on the band wagon of The Hunger Games but am glad that I did! I've really enjoyed the first and am promptly starting Catching Fire. Interested to see how it all turns out.

Whether or not you love a cup of good Java like I do this book is a fascinating look at the history of the brown gold told in an entertaining style. It appears coffee might be the reason the West became so enlightened...ya think? Check it out...a nice easy read with some interesting facts.

This was great. They also changed the format so it's read in Western style (L-R). The story about the sex slave still haunts me.

I admit, I did buy this one because I thought I should at least read the classics that Oprah's people were reading. But I really developed a love affair with Steinbeck a few summers ago. As I was on my last few chapters of the novel, I was driving through the Salinas Valley on a road trip from San Francisco to L.A., and I spotted a sign for the next exit and the National Steinbeck Center! It was just too perfect how I saw the sign by sheer accident, and had time to pull off the highway and make the exit! I am so glad I took that detour, because I hadn't had much exposure to Steinbeck, and the stop at the museum really brought him to life for me. I love that it's a retelling of Cain and Abel. And I absolutely LOVE the way this novel ends with the final Hebrew word, "timshel," or “thou mayest,” which comes from the story of Cain and Abel in the Bible. The theme is the freedom of choice that humans have to overcome evil.

Hysterical. Can put it down and pick it up again and laugh exactly where you left off. Author was brilliant. Too bad he's dead.

I read this at Barnes and Noble because my library hasn't gotten its copy in yet. I enjoyed it.

Hot? Yes. Romantic? No Enjoyable? In parts. I had a hard time getting past the annoying prose. Extreme angst and violence are not a problem for me, but "starburst hole", "flaming passage" and "moist chute" are.

FINALLY SOME SOLID INFO!! I felt like the last book was just nonsense and filler but this one was great! I enjoyed looking at all the past lives of Luce and it was nice getting a glimpse into the curse. I think this last book will be amazing!!!
