It's long. Some lines make it worth it though, but I have to say that that first 1/2 isn't too thrilling. I feel like there are points when I wanted to say: "Charles, was this part REALLY necessary?"

A "novel" that is clearly almost a memoir (she wrote one of those later) about incest. Not a cheerful topic, but this book is well-written, if you can stomach it.

I absolutely loved this book. Being new to Arizona, I could totally relate to her feelings about the heat! I can't relate to the many hardships they went through while trying to settle in this wild west place, though. I felt connected to my husbands ancestors while reading this book, knowing they were here settling this area in the late 1800s. The love story in this book was one of the best love stories I've ever read. It was so real and not cheesy or fluffed up like many other love stories. I can't recommend this book enough.

I don't even know what to say about this book. It is certainly a huge, epic story. While I'm not sure if I actually liked it, it certainly was a compelling read. Basically, this is the story of a man who ruins the lives of everyone he comes in contact with, especially his wife and daughters. He is a horrible, violent, racist bigot. It is also the story of a bond between 4 sisters. They support each other, protect each other, and stick together no matter what happens. And what happens is mostly bad, bad, bad. The author's style is very understated. There would be page after page of everyday details of the sisters' lives and then bam!---she'd slam you with something horrible. I found myself frequently asking, "Did that really happen?"

I really considered giving this book a 4/5, but I opted for a 3 just to avoid the all-too-common phenomena of grade inflation (how I made it through college). The story is interesting despite its meandering character, the first part of the book (litterally up until the 50% mark on my kindle) is about his abandonment on and subsequent treck across Africa and the second part is about his adventures as a pirate. By far, the most annoying thing about this book is that it would superficially describe some great adventure and then say something like, "but that account is far to long to be mentioned here." Also, the end is somewhat hastily tied up. Other than that, it made for a decent adventure tale. The worst: Superficial descriptions of important or interesting events. The best: The adventures described are fairly interesting.

Recommend anyone who sees Samson and Delilah might read this. An inspiring memoir of one teacher's efforts to try and make a difference to the lives of the kids in the community of Arakun, and also some lovely stories of her loves, her friendships with aboriginal community teachers,her dog and her sister who came to live with her. The observations she makes about the education system will hopefully be read by the relevant governments.

This book was a lot better than I expected. Some interesting twists and turns. I loved how books kept appearing for Chloe. It totally makes sense to a person who loves books. I would highly recommend this book!
