A promising start to a more grounded take on Tezuka's "Greatest Robot in the World" storyline. This version reads more like a detective story, but with much of the themes and philosophies intact. The odd jarring moment (I'm not sure the more primitive robots need to wear clothes), but overall well-told and compelling.

This is not an easy read. This is not a book for reading on a bench in the park on a sunny afternoon. This is a book that will torment you and stress you out and make you sweaty and neurotic. It is not necessarily chronological. It is gory and in places utterly revolting. You will probably not like a single one of the characters. There will be pages and pages where the narrator describes in excrutiating detail everything he eats, everything he wears, everything he uses in the shower. It is possible that you will hate the narrator. That said, it is an amazing book and I love it. It is a bloody take on the rampant materialism and declining morality of the 1980s. It makes an excellent companion piece to 'Fight Club.'

Of the zillion earth-toned folk guitar books bearing Grossman's name, this one is my favorite. Players who read music and find tablature distracting will be pleased to find that Grossman consigns each notation method to its own page. For a beginning music-reader this arrangement seems particularly useful. What's more, each piece features a photo essay illustrating every change in left-hand position. That last feature may be overkill but this is still the best laid-out folk guitar book I have ever played from.

باولوكويلهو وكعادته في أغلب رواياته، يطرح آراءه الفلسفية في قالب روائي درامي، وفي هذه الرواية يأخذنا في رحلة إلى أعماق النفس البشرية من خلال قصة عاهرة، فيتحدّث عن مشاعرها وأحلامها وطموحها، ويكتب من خلالها عن العديد من أسرار النفس البشرية بالنسبة للرجل والمرأة على حد سواء الرواية تكاد تخلو من حبكة درامية وعقدة حقيقية، هي مجرد رحلة لعاهرة من بلدها الأم في البرازيل حيث العائلة والدفء والحب الحقيقي مع وجود الفقر والجهل إلى أوروبا حيث المال والثروة ولكن بلا روح، ومن هناك تبدأ رحلتها مع ذاتها ومع الآخرين في سعي نحو اكتشاف الكثير من أسرار النفس البشرية، وما تخفيه المظاهر الخارجية للإنسان حيث تتكشّف الأسرار هناك في غرفة النوم في 11 دقييقة فقط، فهناك لا نصبح عراة الأجساد فقط ولكن تتعرّى أرواحنا معها.

Finished this today on a busride back from New York City. It was an engrossing and a quick read but I found it a bit lacking. The story idea was very interesting and I found myself reading just to find out what happens. The pacing is a trifle slow, but that is forgivable since it is setting up the basis for the rest of the series. My main problem with the book was a very small one, but it bugged me because of my biological background. It was the biological infeasiblity of large lizards dominating the ecosystem of the Americas while still having a rather large population of mammals--both small rodents and buffalo. But it was a very personal nitpick and probably would not bother anyone else. It was a very interesting look at what if's and I already own the second book so I will read it.
