It's really funny looking at the change in essay styles from the mid-80's to the early 21st century. Basically people dropped a lot of the word-dropping and pretentious bullshit, and started writing funnier, more accessible stuff. I really the like the 2003 edition, both for the Anne Fadiman's selection of essays and her excellent introduction, where she talks about how she wanted to bust the series out of it's heavy use of essays from the New Yorker and Granta, then found that when it came down to her final selection she realized that even though there were lots of truly excellent essays from other publications she realized that the ones that stood out had been the best edited pieces, with the fat trimmed and the sentences tightened. Which meant that she ended up choosing a lot of New Yorker stuff. Oh the irony. I like the pine green cover of this one too. Better than that ugly powder blue they chose for the next year...

I am really enjoying this one. Jill picked it up because it looked interesting, and I have to say, her impeccable has once again proved infallible. This is an interesting, non-fiction study about the nature of happiness from the perspective of psychology, anthropology, cognitive science, and philosophy. To me, that all sounds terribly boring, but the writer is SO good and witty and entertaining that you don't even mind that you're actually learning stuff.

I love Simon R Green's books and the Secret Histories series is normally quite good...but this is the worst book in the series. Don't get me wrong I like the story and the action (although it gets really over the top in some places) but this book has a lot of mistakes in it. And I know some people are thinking that I'm just talking about "well the character were a red shirt in that particular scene but it's really supposed to be blue" type thing. But I'm not. I'm talking rather big mistakes like getting the gender of a character wrong. Granted Ethel is an alien from another world, but Ethel has always been identified with a male pronoun...until here where Green constantly refers to Ethel as she. Or how about referring to Subway Sue as partnering up with another Drood agent...when Subway Sue was most definitively killed in the last book (and really the family would partner an agent with an outsider?) Or how the Merlin Glass was acquired?? At times this feels like it was a short story that they went "oh lets make it into a longer book!" And if that's what happened it shows. This is a book that Green should have reread a few times before it got published to correct the mistakes.

Berapa ramai pula umat Islam yang lebih bersifat bigotory dan fanatik, kononya atas nama mempertahankan agama? Islam menurut Aslan, sebagaimana yang telah berlaku dalam masyarakat lalu akan terus berevolusi, sejajar dengan pembangunan dan kemajuan dalam masyarakat. Reformasi Islam sudahpun bermula dan sedang berlaku. Jadi di mana anda, reformist atau counter-reformist?
