I went to sleep reading this and woke up to finish. It was difficult to put it down and I was captivated by the first novel I've read about Joe Pickett. I'm not a hunting fan but the deranged activists scare me more. It was a well written mystery with a cast of characters you had to love or hate.

Wonderfully written, but creeped me out way too much to really enjoy it.

I finally ended up buying a new copy of this, seeing as how our other copy has vanished off the face of the earth (maybe it's floating around Soul Society somewhere, or in some Hollow's stomach). Anyway, I'm not a big Ganju fan, but I did enjoy seeing all of the Captains, minus Ukitake. Knowing how the Soul Society arc wraps up makes it very interesting to read along, picking up the small nuances of each character's behavior. Also fascinating that Renji is unaware of who Matsumoto's captain is. If nothing else, Ichigo's infiltration of Soul Society definitely brought the various squads together.

Years have passed since the ending of the first Hyperion action took place. This book introduces a new set of characters, and a completely new tone to the novels. In a very real way, it starts a new series in the same world, but is working towards a single, epic conclusion. A great read, and a worthy contribution to this epic.

My first John Green book. It's quite something isn't it? I'm a little fond of it I must admit. There's no denying it. Not only because I connected with it, but perhaps also because deep inside I know it will be his best work, ever. I know that's a big statement to make, and completely unfair but I'll be sticking by it until I prove myself wrong. At the time I had no idea who the author was. I was also a little disappointed by the slow pace right at the beginning, but boy am I glad that I stuck with it. In no time at all the pace picked up like crazy and I couldn't get enough. We are presented with dear Miles. Not the most good looking or confident of boys, but determined he is. Determined for a change of scenery which he has chosen in the shape of a boarding school. It's there that he meets - you know who - LOOKING FOR ALASKA is many things. It's realistic - perhaps it's biggest asset. However, apart from his intriguing obsession with last words, you will find yourself charmed by the humour, the awkwardness that is our MC. Guys. There is depth. And then, of course, there is Alaska who is the greatest mystery of all. I did not see the ending coming and to be frank, it kind of blew me away. I did not expect it, I did not want it, and after I had turned the final page I lay there for god knows how long deep in thought. Thinking. Just thinking about it. The what if's, the what should, and should not have happened. It was agony. Wondering and assuming what happened kept niggling at me and I hated that we were left with no real answer. That the ending, in a way, was so abrupt and depressing. But. It was a fantastic ending, thought - provoking and twisted, but fantastic. Shall I tell you a little secret? * whispers* This is the only John Green book I have read. I suppose after reading LOOKING FOR ALASKA I'm afraid of being let down. Purely because I'm more than sure none of his other books can match it, the reviews say as much, and I'm a trust - those -reviews kind of girl. So, since I still have some unfinished business with Alaska, I think I'll hold on to her for just a little bit longer. You don't want to miss out on this beauty. Trust me.

Paulo Coelho is one of my favorite writers, and this is the book where he hooked me for good. The book tells the story of the cynical, urban working girl Pilar, who runs into her childhood best friend after many years and discovers a couple of pretty astonishing things, all right in a row: A) that he's been in love with her all his life, B) that he's entered the seminary, C) that he belongs to a strange spiritual cult dedicated to worshiping the feminine face of God, and D) that he can perform miracles. Pilar's freakouts to all these pieces of information are comfortingly human and understandable. But when her friend (who is never named) talks her into joining him on a road trip through Spain and France, the characters they meet, the sights they see, and the lessons Pilar learns help her to let her guard down, fall in love, and find her way back to the faith of her childhood. There's a scene where Pilar and her friend are eating dinner and she tries to get him to knock his glass off the table, just to see if he'll do it. It's hard to explain, you kind of have to read it, but that scene is just amazing. I also love the opening chapter, where Pilar is sitting by the banks of the river Piedra lamenting how she screwed things up and lost the love of her life, and the very last line of the book ("'Go and get your things,' he said. 'Dreams mean work.'"). I have to say, Coelho can get a tiny bit didactic--in everything really, not just this book. "The Zahir" and "The Alchemist" suffer from a similar problem. But really, that's nothing compared to the stunning writing in the rest of the book. It's a beautiful read.
