** spoiler alert ** I didn't have high hopes for this book, after being somewhat disappointed with the first in the series. I think Ms. Dodd's writing style is nice, interesting, even humorous and realistic. But there's something that feels lacking in both books of her's I've read. In the first one, the ending sort of felt rushed and fell apart for me. In this one I would say it suffered the same fate. For about the first half of the book, I enjoyed a great deal of it, the story line is well thought out, intriguing, but after a point it feels as though the story is some sort of giant juggling act and some of the balls get dropped. I'm not sure what exactly could be fixed, but it just doesn't seem as tight or well-controlled as the first half. I hope this isn't a common occurrence in her books, as I rather like her otherwise. I also probably liked this a lot better because Dan the hero is Special Forces Army. I am a sucker for military men! The relationship between Pepper and Dan was great, again for the first half of the book, then it went all over the place and I was annoyed. There's a part where Pepper is running away, once again, and Dan totally calls her on it, and in a fit of anger let's her have it. I loved this! Pepper deserved the dressing down, she was being totally cowardly and she needed to be put in her place. Unfortunately, Pepper twists it to make him feel bad because he's suppose to love her and can't talk to her that way. This is where the book really began to lose me. She was running away! The whole rest of the book she held this against him, and he let her! Coward was running away from danger, after promising to let Dan help her, to let Dan protect her, and she was going to run away and screw up the operation, putting herself and several others in great danger. He literally tackles her to keep her from running, and when he calls her out, Pepper someone turns it on him, as he much not love her, and she was only leaving to protect him. He has to beg for forgiveness and she still refuses to hear him out. A month goes by, she finally decides she can't live without him, and runs back to him. No words are spoken, no regret for treating each other that way, they just agree they are two wounded souls who need each other. Whatever and good luck with that. There is one more in the series, I want to read it, hoping third time is the charm, and also to solve the mystery of what really happened to the parents and why the children were scattered like seeds in the wind, and what the town of Hobart, Texas is really hiding. God I hope I'm not disappointed by it, please let it be something really seedy and evil and well plotted. Is that too much to ask for?

Great story. I couldn't put the book down. Some of the terminology was a bit overwhelming, but the action made up for it. I agree that NASA is a waste of tax dollars. I happened to be in Houston & visit the NASA center where the spacesuits are made at the exact time I was reading this book. It was interesting to see how NASA operates & compare it to the book. I would definitely recommend this one.

Pretty good for a mild ghost story. I didn't like the Ross the ghost hunter guy; too lame. But everyone else was OK. the Vermont history was interesting - I didn't know if that were true or not so I had to Google it.

I read to find books like this one! The Lacuna was a portal for me into another world everytime I opened the cover. I was completely absorbed in the story from the first sentence to the last. I picked it up last week because Mike was in Mexico City, and if I could be there with him physically I figured, at least I could go there in spirit. It was a great choice. But what starts as a story in Mexico quickly becomes a biting critism of US culture and politics. The following sentence stopped me in my tracks: "But if Truman calls for any change, education improvements, or Social Security, a chorus shouts him down: welfare state, collectivism, conspiracy." Wow! Substitute Obama for Truman and it still holds true. As I was reading the parts about the efforts of Americans during WWII, I had to wonder if that could ever happen again. Americans scrificing! Rich and poor getting the same number of ration cards...and doing so gladly. Perhaps if we were ever to be engaged in war on that scale again Americans might be that generous. Might. Ask that now, even in the context of our current wars, and imagine the howlers. The noise would be deafening. Fantastic read! Highly recommended.

It's hard to make good arguments in a book so short about a topic so broad. This one is at least very well-written, and the authors do occasionally bring new analysis to the debate, but like most (all?) books about globalization, pro or con, it's unsatisfying, and is little more than propaganda with which you can't help but disagree in part or in whole.

Really quick read. I wanted to read it because 1. I live on Long Island and 2. I love Kung Fu. Pretty interesting read from a pretty good writer. An editor should have gone through and nitpicked a few things but overall it was a good read. I would love to know what happened to Sifu Lau.

Overall, a good story just entirely too long.

A good idea buried under screeds of exposition. It purports to be an exciting historical mystery, told in the currently faddish mode with a modern learned heroine and an ancient heroine who does exciting stuff. In fact the modern girl is the most drippy dippy girl in all the world with some kind of affection deficit disorder, having affairs with any man who looks at her. The ancient girl is a bit better, but in a rather authorly-calculated manner, never actually does her hareemly duties, but is 'rescued' by 'events'. Get some backbone characters! And you Author lady! Recommended for: someone drippy on an undemanding beach holiday.
