This is a book in which I had to do a speach on Mathabane. Before reading this book, I had no idea what Apartheid was since it was abolished when I was just starting school. Anyway, it was a very intersting and unconventional autobiography about life in a foreign land that at some ways seemed like 1960s American South. He talks about going from relative poverty to, using his talents, abling to escape Apartheid South Africa and be a poster child of why the practice is wrong. Besides Mandella, Mathabane is instrumental in bring to light Apartheid in South Africa.

I'd say this is my favorite of the Darger books I've yet seen. Perfect. My favorite painter of the late 20th century by a landslide. Why is it so impossible to keep books on him in print and under $60? Many thanks to Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum (THE best museum!) for showing his work some years ago, and basically changing me forever.

I enjoyed the nutty plot, the humor, Wilde's wit, and the characters. Overall it was very entertaining. (The movie version with Rupert Everett, Colin Firth, and Reese Witherspoon is really fun too.) And yet, I couldn't stand Dorian Gray. Go figure.

If you ever really need to feel smart read Lord of the Rings. With a movie being made of every book out there its hard to enjoy a good read, but the movie leaves a lot of good stuff that Tolkien has in his stories.
