this book pulls me in two directions. first, i want to believe we can be the change we wish to see in the world - and gladwell breaks down and labels people and ideas that have done just that - by starting trends or spreading a message. unfortunately, that means one person can begin a suicide epidemic in a tiny island nation or that paul revere can spread news faster than another galloping messenger on that same night. not everyone has the ability to spread the message as effectively and deviant behavior is catching as well. second, gladwell's approach to these issues is always drawn from very dry sources, scientific studies and corporate marketing campaigns. by the end of the book, when he was breaking down how to fight cigarette smoking, I was tired of data and moneymakers. Can everything be neatly categorized and declared a rule? God, I hope not. I found myself less inspired as the book went on, which I didn't expect. the writing was missing the human side of smoking, and smokers and adoption and nurture - science cannot answer everything about being human and tidwell is very scientific and data oriented in his approach. Do we each contain the power to create change and communicate to a larger audience? I got the feeling from this book the answer is no - not equally.

This isn't the first time I've read this book, and it certainly won't be the last. I make an effort to read this series at least once a year, and I have since I was fourteen years old when I first stumbled upon it. When I was thirteen years old, my best friend moved one-thousand miles away from Hannibal, Missouri to Houston, Texas, much like the situation of the protagonist in the story, so I can relate to almost everything in this novel. I know what it was like to have your favorite person in the world abruptly leave and be left with the non-friends as remains. It's difficult to go through. I re-read this book whenever I miss her, which is often, and it reminds me of why she's my best friend in the world. Even nearly eight years later.
