Reader thoughts: I love Anne's emotional ups and downs, how she's always able to see the bright side, even if she insists upon focusing on the gloomy side. She's a surprise and joy to Matthew and Marilla at Green Gables: less than what they'd hoped for and more than they'd ever dreamed. Somehow, Anne has the curious quality of bringing out the best in people (in some people, and it often takes a while). She's very dramatic, which is strangely endearing. She's full of energy and imagination and compassion for everyone (except Gilbert Blythe) and always does what she thinks is right. Meet Anne of Green Gables. Writer thoughts: Some books have phenomenal plots (Dragon and Thief), others a witty voice (Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians), others have heart-fluttering romance (Ella Enchanted), others extreme personalities (The Legend of Eli Monpress), others a fun magic system (The Singer of All Songs), others a masterful setting (The Way of Kings), and others strong themes (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe). This book, though, has one of the best characters. What is it that makes readers love Anne so, and how do I capture that in my own characters? I think part of it is Anne's honesty (she always says what she thinks) and her determination to think the best of everyone. Maybe it's the reader identifying with her or wanting to be more like her? Perhaps everyone is (or knows) someone like Anne.

I gave this book a try on a friends strong recommendation a long time ago, but never made it more than a few pages. My book club then chose it shortly after the film came out, I was excited at the chance to read it. The beginning was a bit slow, but I enjoyed the survival part of the story. I loved the twist ending, which was the primary topic of my book club meeting. We also spent a lot of time talking about the spiritual elements.

When I picked up this book, I was all set to hate it-I figured that it was going to be nothing but set up for the 4th book. However, the further I got into the story I realized that if Mr. Paolini had tried to wrap up this story in this book it would have been too rushed and unbelievable.Yes, it is set up for book 4, but the information and the adventures in this book are necessary to complete the series. I found myself pleasantly surprised by this book. Now of course comes the waiting for the last book and the conclusion of the series.

This was pretty good. I was more interested in the story about the affair rather than the trial part of the story, I would get to those parts and it would kind of slow it down for me. Not my favorite book by her but good.

A personal favourite - I love Anne Fine's children's books. Funny set pieces about hitting the teenzone - immensely sympathetic to all concerned. It doesn't stand with great works of literature as a 5 star book but oh it said so much to me at the time.
