4.5 stars "You are my soul," he said. "I have seen its shape, and it is you. You have walked in my heart, and I hear the echo of your footsteps there." In the Pennsylvania wilderness of 1723, twenty-five year-old Susannah has already been married for ten years to the dreary and dogmatic German, Hans Jacobs. Having suffered a number of miscarriages and lost a baby son, she is pregnant again. When William Penn negotiated a treaty with the Native Americans, the white settlers were not to pass over the Susquehanna River. The area was to remain a hunting ground. However with Penn's death the whites have claimed the land. When a hunting party of Algonquin find their land has been occupied by whites' houses, their land plowed and animals grazing in pastures where there should be game, they retaliate by setting fire to the settlers' homes. Susannah watches from the forest as her house burns and her husband and stepson desperately try to douse the flames, unaware that she has been seen by the Algonquin and quietly surrounded. One warrior, Nikoneweh knocks her out and takes her captive. Tonnewa is also Algonquin but from a different clan. Realising that Susannah is a captive, Tonnewa argues that both Susannah (and Charlie, a young boy taken from a neighbouring farm) should be returned. But his advice is ignored. There is no love lost between Tonnewa and Nikoneweh, Susannah's captor. They have been rivals for many years. Nikoneweh has claimed Susannah for himself and insists the situation must go before their council and Tonnewa reluctantly agrees. Set against the background of tensions between the British and the French, and the whites and the Native Americans, Beloved Savage portrays the gritty reality of the times. Miscarriages, infant deaths, diseases and killings are a threat, and the physical and emotional hardships and daily grind of life, a constant on the frontier. The love between Tonnewa and Susannah builds slowly, steadily as they learn to respect and trust each other. Despite the title (a by-product of the 80s and 90s) there is nothing savage about Tonnewa. This is a man who will go to any lengths to protect Susannah and her unborn child. He claims her baby as his own and calls it theirs. Perfectly balanced between the historical detail and the romance, this is a keeper. It's very difficult to find well-written and realistic Native American historicals like this. Since its hey-day in the 80s and 90s, new and well-written titles are as rare as hen's teeth. This hidden gem is for lovers of historical western and Native American romances. The cover art does have a nice little touch by accurately depicting a pregnant Susannah. Written in 1990 this seems to be the only book that Sandra Bishop ever wrote. Well I guess if you're only going to write one book, it may as well be a desert island keeper. Steam: 2.5

Q&A by Vikas Swarup is a very good book with a somewhat unique plot. First of all let me say that this is even better from the movie and Slumdog Millionaire is the like, the greatest movie ever. Another great thing is the characterization of this book, there are 13 questions, each with a differant story, the stories range from his childhood to adulthood so you can imagine how many characters there were. And i loved this soooo much although at times he'd refer back to other characters, which made it difficult to remember all of them. Another thing i liked was his description/details, one key example of his great description is when he describes the Taj Mahal, i felt as if i have already been there and as if i can picture every angle in which he described it. He perfectly describes the Taj Mahal and the different times of day which gives it a different color. An author is great when the reader can picture every detail in his mind. Bravo Vikas Swarup, Bravo! Another thing i liked was his dialouge, everything was so fluent, his vocabulary is always very excuisite, i like it very much, also i love the conversations because they are so filled with stuff that makes you want to read on and on, with all these characters he gives great dialouge to all making the book's dialouge plentyful and also with so many three way or more conversations you always have a great understanding of who's saying what and it gives a load of information about the character!
