I have been hearing about the wonderful writing talents of Patricia Briggs for so long that when I heard she had a new book coming out that will begin a new series, I decided this would be my chance to finally read what everyone was raving about. Cry Wolf is about Anna Latham, an abused woman who was brutally attack and changed into a werewolf. Anna’s story was first introduced in the 2007 On the Prowl Anthology in Briggs’ story, Alpha and Omega. Ana has been a werewolf for three years, and those years were hell on Earth. She has been part of the Chicago werewolf pack and the alpha, Leo, allowed his pack to abuse Anna both sexually and physically with daily beatings. Poor Anna is barely surviving because she has become so submissive to the point she will not look anyone in the eye and barely has enough money to buy food. Cry Wolf begins where Alpha and Omega has left off. Anna was saved by Charles Conick, is the son of the Marrock, a.k.a. alpha of the werewolves in Montana. Charles is his father’s enforcer and came to Chicago to implement some justice. He quickly realizes two things about Anna. She is his mate and an Omega. An Omega is neither dominate or submissive but brings harmony to the wolves that reside inside in each one of the pack members. After Charles took care of things in Chicago, he and his father Bran welcome Anna into their pack and for her to move to Montana where she can get to know her mate better. Anna leaves her unfortunate life in Chicago and goes with Charles, who is now recovering from some wombs he received while protecting Anna. Anna is very scared and not sure what to think of Bran and Charles. She knows they would never hurt her like the men that abused her in Chicago. Both the Conick men realize how special Anna is and how important she is to the werewolf community in general. Charles’s wolf would like nothing better to claim and mate with Anna, but because she needs to come with terms about herself and heal from the damage placed upon her, he will court her slowly, and by Anna living with him, it makes things much smoother. As soon as they arrive in Montana, things within the pack are uneasy. There is a rogue wolf in the mountains killing humans and there may also be some black magic involved. Not only does Bran have problems with unrest within his pack, but there is a witch, thousands of years old, who wants to make Bran her pet, along with Charles and gain more power. Charles will go deep into the mountains to find this evil fiend and Anna will come along with him to help. Charles and Anna may make a great team, but this dark witch has powers the likes neither has seen. It will come down to a fierce battle of wits and magic to enable Anna and her mate to come out on top and bring peace again to pack and those who have succumbed to the evil in the Montana Wilderness. After finishing Cry Wolf I have come to the conclusion that Patricia Briggs should be considered one of the few master authors of Urban Fantasy, and may have begun a whole new world of werewolf fantasy that has not been written before. The world Briggs has created had me hooked from the first page where I couldn’t stop reading for anything in the world. The action is fierce and the characters are unique in their descriptions and their thoughts. Speaking of characters, Briggs has such a good thing with Charles and Anna. I wouldn’t be surprised if they become the next big couple to look forward to in literature. Even though we have a small glimpse of what is to come between these two, Briggs has set up a great relationship that will be built on trust, respect, and most importantly love. Charles is not that typical alpha hero we usually read, but an understanding man who has found the woman for him. He wants her to heal so their life together can be one of happiness and joy. And for that, Charles is truly a hero in every sense of the word. Don’t be surprised if he becomes your favorite hero of 2008. Anna, will tug at your heart because of the horrendous abuse she has been through. She may seem damaged, but inside, there is a strong willed woman inside who is a survivor. Her healing process will take some time and it will be an interesting thing to read, and I have no doubt that Briggs will be able to pull it off nicely. If you have never read Patricia Briggs and want to start now, definitely read Cry Wolf. Fans of Urban Fantasy who are craving a book with well written characters and a story that has some “bite”, I urge you to go out and read Cry Wolf as fast as you can.
