"Scandinavian women who believe they’re too tall can get their legs shortened by having a surgeon break the femur bones and cut them down to a desirable length. Chinese men and women wanting the opposite can have a four-inch metal rod implanted in their upper legs to add height. Approximately half of Korean girls today are westernizing their eyes. Men worldwide are signing up for phalloplasty procedures—to enlarge and lengthen their penis..." Even though I wrote this text as part of my review of Susie Orbach's latest book Bodies, I still can't help but shake my head each time I read it. Orbach, renowned UK psychotherapist and one of the driving forces behind Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty, opened my eyes to the true nature of our relationship with our bodies. I've always known that the media has played a part in my own personal struggle to accept my body, but after reading Bodies abundant with realities such as, "2,000 to 5,000 times a week, we receive images of bodies enhanced by digital manipulation," I now recognize the full extent to which the media and our environment negatively affects how we view and feel about our bodies. Despite the the alarming facts, what I appreciate most about her book is that she left me feeling hopeful. Pick up a copy and become inspired to cultivate a life without body shame, without the need to remodel yourself against an unattainable Western ideal. I figured out what 42 means. This is a great book, tied with The Great Gatsby as my favorite. Definitely one of Vonnegut's best.

So the second time Ms. Green used the phrase "scraped her hair back into a pony tail" I almost threw this thing aside. But how often does anyone write about dealing with a mother-in-law? So I read the first quarter and last quarter, and I would urge a future edition of this book to consider the chopping block.

I really liked it! I'd give it a 4.5 if I could, only because the pirate angle was just too cheesy. I'm glad I was able to keep up on the story~ doesn't happen often when you've missed the first 14 installments of the series. Side note; I love the main character's name! Annja... very cool =)

** spoiler alert ** If Jane Austen’s granddaughter wrote romance novels, this would be it. A delightful, sex-free romance which is also a comedy of manners and class. A Countess Below Stairs focuses on Anna Grazinsky, a young exiled Russian countess who seeks employment as a maid in an English country house in order to support her widowed mother and younger brother. Anna, with her enthusiasm for the job fostered by an 30-year-old housekeeping manual, breathes new life into a manor worn out by war. Her curtseying, long out of place, throws off the staff, as does this obviously gently bred woman working as a domestic. Her cheerful willingness to do the most menial of tasks wins over the household staff, and her astute understanding and sympathy makes her an integral part of the household quickly. Anna is actually temporary household help, hired to polish the house in order to put it on the market. The imminent sale of the house is halted when Rupert, the Earl of Westerholme, arrives with his wealthy fiancé. Rupert inherited his house after the death of his older brother, and Rupert himself was a wounded war hero. Promising his dying brother that he will do everything possible to save the family home, Rupert is confused but relieved when beautiful heiress Muriel accepts a proposal he couldn’t quite remember giving. When Rupert finds himself falling for Anna, he is torn between his obligation to his staff, his promise to his brother and his fiancé and his desire for love and happiness. Anna slips easily between her two worlds, welcoming the English into her rowdy, chaotic Russian extended family, and enhancing the elegance of English country life. This tender love story unfolds with humor and heart while touching on lost Russian jewels, a missing cousin, eugenics and disability, an inter-faith love story and the eternal class struggle. Even the smallest characters are nuanced and developed and the entire book is a satisfying, enjoyable read. Eva Ibbotson has become a new favorite author.
