Boy's best friend turns rabid (so much better than Old Yeller). I've read it two or three times in the past decade, and a few of the images stick with me as distinctive reference points for human sentiment- dropping the milk on the floor, the medal-turned-ash tray, and one or two others. The first time I read it, I was scared by a couple scenes and unhappy with the depression it left me in. it doesn't scare me anymore, but I still appreciate it as horror. Part of the reason the horror in Cujo is so easy for me to appreciate is that the scary parts are realistic (as opposed to his plethora of invader-from-outer-space stories). I've read most of King's novels, and I set this one, Pet Cemetery, Carrie, The Shining, Misery , and one or two others apart as being his best.

This book was incredible. The women's choices at this time in China were so limited. I feel that this book was about the human psyche, which I am always interested in. Great read.

This is two interleaved books. Bonanza, book 4, follows the story of Jack Shaftoe who is sold to the Barbary pirates, and Junto, book 5, which follows the story of Eliza to Holland, France, and other places in her quest to make herself financially secure. I really enjoyed this book. More than the first. Not for those who don't enjoy long tangents and it really requires a good basic knowledge of European history as he doesn't slow down to explain much.

There is an area in the basement of my building that resembles something like an alter for books being passed on. I found this book down there and brought it home. I forgot about it until recently and am now totally into it. What a story. It has introduced me to a bunch of characters that I have only really known by name like Josephine Baker and many more. And I love that this was actually someone's life. It is inspiring.

Having never read the unabridged Mahabharata (which runs to about 100,000 stanzas or roughly 8x the length of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey combined - making it one of the longest written compositions in the world, not to mention making it unlikely that i'll ever get around to reading it) it is difficult to adequately review an abridged version. However, I can make a few comments. Narayan renders this extensive work into a brief 179 pages, an amazing feat, and produces a very well written and entertaining story. This comes at a cost, however, as many of the more esoteric dialogs have been removed leaving the fundamental story and plot, without much of the philosophical ideas that make it a rich religious text.
