Examining the question of (to quote the back of the book) why so many Americans votes against their economic and social interests--a condition that I (though I'm not the first) would like to call a kind of suicide voting--Frank offers an insightful and very readable answer by examining the politics and history of his own state, Kansas.

When I read Serena Yates' review about this book, I was surprised because she doesn't easily give a bad review. And if she does, she tries to back it. Her review got me so intruiged, I had to buy the book and read it. And my lovely Serena, you were so right. I never expect high prose with these kind of shifter books, but like to read them for the easy-at-heart and light content, but this was terrible. The writing itself was not the problem, but the selfish mean alpha Riven who treated his mate in a inferior way that cannot be accepted and tolerated. I actually liked Riven, till 15% before the end of the book. He used his position as alpha against his mate and that's an absolute no-go! I mean, I NEVER would accept this behaviour from my mate. I cannot say it better than Serena, so if you want to read her review, please click here.

As a scientist, I really enjoyed this book and the ethical topic that it covered. It was very timely in light of current biological technologies.

liked this better than new moon, this is what I call a dirty kitchen book (because you can't put it down to clean the kitchen!)

Really fascinating discussion of popular culture, philosophical traditions and contemporary understandings of the body (largely within a "Western" social context). Hugely formative for the work I did as an undergrad

This is one of those classics that I assumed would be a great chore (having just finished Parzival).....but that's really not the case. Pretty damned enjoyable so far. I don't think I'll be able to argue against its status as the world's greatest novel.

This was a book with a very important premise: Which is cooler, zombies or unicorns? The whole debate, and the deeply entrenched opinions on each side, are wonderfully reminiscent of the great astronauts vs. cavemen debate (on this, as in almost everything else, I'm Team Angel. Er, I mean Team Astronaut). Two authors, Holly Black and Justine Larbalestier lead two teams of authors, Team Unicorn and Team Zombie respectively, in writing stories. The stated purpose was to determine which were cooler. The real purpose, of course, was to create a fun romp of an anthology. They succeeded. Each story was introduced by both Holly and Justine discussing how this story tips the balance toward or away from their chosen team. The banter was extremely amusing, and reminded me of many similar debates I've had with my friends over the years. To no one's surprise whatsoever, I came down firmly on the side of Team Unicorn. Holly's opinions pretty much echo my own: I don't care for shambling, disease, or the walking dead. I liked best the zombie stories where I could pretend they were "some other kind of undead thing I like." (Holly rocks, by the way. I must find more books by her. Or invite her to my next party.) I had to grit my teeth to get through the creepy zombie stories. Eugh. But I loved the unicorn stories (even the upsetting ones). The thing is, I understand Team Zombie's point of view. Zombies are a great metaphor for human society. They are entropy made animate and a perfect cipher for commercialism, materialism, and soullessness. But I just don't like them. I like unicorns. Even the ones whose farts smell like rainbows, and who live in Fairyland, and prefer virgins as company. It's the same as the way that I can recognize that lots of music is much more sophisticated and deep and worthy than my happy country music; I just like country music and unicorns better. (I feel like I ought to burst into a rendition of "Fireflies" by Patty Griffin. Or, even better, Faith Hill.) I want all my friends to read this book, so I can see if my guess of who would be which team is correct.

I did not learn anything from this book. Reading a book written by people who read the same magazine as you when you were little is, well, not pointless, but not real point-ful either. I am just freaked out by nostalgia and attempts to justify it. Yes, this magazine did actually change my life, and I can see how someone who became a writer would want to document that fact. And yes I was really excited to get it in the mail from Amanda. And yes I probably am a writer (to the extent that I am... what, a blog is writing?) because of this magazine. But the book is a show, not a tell. And it's written by someone just like me, which is the worst thing I could force myself to read! (Is this true? Did I crave this when I was young?)It's like listening to a Weezer tribute album by bands with names like Cio Cio San. Empowerment is great in general but it certainly leads to a glut!

I got the ARC of this book and I wanted to see what happened, seeing how the last one ended. I was so surprised at the turn this book took! First off, it's much better than the first one and I really liked the first one. This one is much deeper, but still has that hysterical wit and can stand on it's own. The author upped her game even more here. this is what good writing is all about. I can't wait to get the finished book this summer. this is definitely THE book for summer reading. LOVE IT!!!!!
