Little more than 3 years later, I decided to re-read this book, which is one of my absolute favorites. What's changed since then? I definitely think I understand the book better than I did back then, just as I read it in a better way. I used to absolutely love Lord Henry, he was one of my favorite book characters. Now, I kind of have ambiguous feelings towards him. I like that he speaks his mind so often and in the way that he does, but that's something that I also dislike about him now. I also think that he's a very manipulative character in an extremely subtle way, which I also both like and dislike about the character. He seems to take (an unconscious?) pleasure in influencing those weaker than him -- Dorian in this case, of course. And he just seems like an unrealistic character overall, I can't picture him as a person, so to speak. I like him. I don't like him, too. God, I don't know. There are moments in the beggining of the book that are disposable. They don't add much to the story, really, and serve only as a delay to get to what the book is really all about. There are also moments that just seem to drag on and on without necessity (I'm looking at you, chapter eleven). But I always thought this book was brilliant since I read it and my opinion hasn't changed one bit. How can you not get to the last word and just think: ...woah? If there's one thing Oscar Wilde did perfectly, it was to make Dorian Gray look like the most perfect "real life" Adonis in spite of his attitude and all of his actions. I can't get over the fact that he is SUCH a fascinating character. He was always one of my favorite book characters too and I don't think that will ever change. I don't think this is the easiest book to read, Oscar Wilde's writing demands a bit more of attention than the regular at times. But it's so worth it. Just so worth it. I think everyone should read this book. Everyone. Really, it's mandatory. Just read it. Now. Go.

ahhh, i finished it. it wasn't because it was slow or hard or anything, i just wasn't in the mood. quite excellent, really, and a should-read for everyone. not too depressing, and not too heavy-handed with the holocaust.

We've all read and/or seen this story - boy from bad side of town girl from good side of town hate each other so much they love each other. Both characters felt shallow and the few good parts were overshadowed by the sappiest most unbelievable dialogue I've ever read. I could tell Ms. Elkeles had done her homework on the gangs - being from the south side of Chicago where the Folks ruled - I felt she was spot on. I also liked the alternating chapters that kept the story moving and gave you some insight into their lives. I say some insight because you never got the feeling that they would change they way they did at the end. Just by the author saying 5 months later didn't work.

A fun & easy read, although I wouldn't characterize it as "brilliant" as many have. I think best qualified as alternate-history sci-fi, which I think is a label many would shy away from.

While the book started out okay, in the end, it became a cliff's notes version of Pride and Prejudice. There was no real insight into Darcy's thoughts or feelings--what little elaboration there was seemed shallow and superficial. Also, Darcy's relationship with his sister bordered on creepy. The author's writing was awkward and hollow. She was trying to hard to emulate Jane Austen's style, but it lacked the sparkle and originality that Austen's style always has. To be fair, I never liked any of the "sequels" or "alternatives" of Jane Austen's work. I picked this one up only because it promised to stick to the story and not add all the sexy stuff that some of the others added. However, it stuck to the story so much that it was, as I said, like reading cliff's notes. Lesson Learned: Whenever I need a Jane Austen fix, I should just read a Jane Austen book.
Simply, this book makes one of the strongest statements ever on pedagogy -- teachers must be genuine, and to be genuine, we must be vulnerable to our students. It sets aside the war between DI and constructivism, stating that these are far less important than the teacher.
