Parts of this book really resonated with me. Other parts did not. For instance, I hated the first chapter and almost quit reading, but I'm glad I stuck with it. My boyfriend has a low tolerance for self-indulgent pointless BS, but I think he'd really get a lot out of this book, so I created a best-of reading list. I haven't read the Day of the Locust, but Miss Lonelyhearts is dark and funny and surreal and intense and profound. Have I mentioned witty? I highly recommend, but not for the faint of heart ("heart!" hehehehe). Not like it's gross or violent or anything -- far from it. Just very dark in terms of sensibility

Not one of his funnier books, but an intimate look at his relationships with family and boyfriends. Now, the parts that are funny are freaking hilarious! Any story involving his sister Amy just cracked me up! Their wacky sense of humor is right up my alley. I did feel a little guilty laughing at their cruelty to their dad, but I still laughed!
