A very interesting read; it challenges the "traditional" views dominating the current ideas and beliefs of conservative Christianity. Although I am no scholar, the argument presented is persuasive. Hopefully this book will supply understanding and give a new perspective to individuals who find it difficult or impossible to accept one’s sexual preference. Excerpts: “Custom was turned into the law of God. A matter of mere social inconvenience was turned into a matter of morality.” “In all those cases, Paul uses the term ‘nature’ to imply what is characteristic of peculiar in this or that situation. You would not expect a Jew not to be a Jew or the uncircumcised not to be uncircumcised. That is you would not expect someone raised as a Jew to be ignorant of the Jewish law, and you would not expect a Gentile to act like a Jew; that is not in their ‘nature.’” “We have already seen that Paul uses two different kinds of words to describe the Gentiles’ deeds. He calls their sexual deeds degrading, shameful, dishonorable. He calls their other deeds wicked, evil, malice. The terminology itself shows a deliberate contrast between what is socially objectionable and what is ethically wrong.”

This was a fun read. I was in love with Johnny Depp when the film came out, and so saw it several times. Reading the book was an opportunity to get to know those characters a little better, to travel behind the scenes and into their thoughts. I would say that this is worth reading. Let's hear it for small town Americana, as well as the clean and dirty secrets it hides.

But rumors and inuendos compromise her and her parents don't see her getting into a good marriage any time soon. And boy were they ever wrong about that. She meets Duncan and falls in love with him at first site. As Duncan puts it a breath of fresh air, when meeting Sabrina. Now the only thing compromising their relationship is Ophelia and all the other woman ving for Duncan's attention.

I was intrigued by the many things I heard about this novel before reading it, and I have to say it lived up its hype. The story loosely moves among a group of people somehow connected to the fictional record label, Sow's Ear. And the author employs a lot of different techniques to tell this story over 40 years. All in all, it's a great story and any book that can have a chapter made up of PowerPoint slides and still have it be entertaining is a winner in my book!
