If it weren't for book club, I never would have gotten through this. For one thing, I do not like magic realism at all so I never fully bought into the power of the main character's clogged nose. I should have realized immediately that this book wouldn't be for me when a review I read on Amazon compared it to 100 Years of Solitude which I also could barely get through. That said, I still give it 2 stars and not 1 because I really felt like it was an accomplishment to finish it. I just wished Rushdie explained more about what was going on in India at the time. I'm not familiar and as a result couldn't understand a lot of what he referred to.

I just got the book delivered via bookdepository today and looking forward to start reading it tonight. I loved the Robin Hobb Tawny man and the Farseer trilogy so i have high hopes that this series will be as good as them. **** Finished the book yesterday (10.March) and i loved it very much,couldn't leave it out of my hands.It is a bit of a long prelude (almost to the half of the book) but after that it becomes much better.Can't wait to read the next part!

A haunting love story about a 16 year old Canadian woman and a Cambodian man during the 1970's. Their love affair spans decades and stretches from Montreal to the Cambodian city of Phnom Penh in the aftermath of genocide by the Khmer Roughe regime. The short, dream-like chapters have a poetic quality and the writing has no boundaries, whether it be in punctuation or description. Her prose is challenging, but I believe it creates both a beautiful and unsettling effect. The Cambodian atrocities are subtle and distant at the beginning of the book but later become personal and horrific. Unforgettable.

I FINALLY decided to read this. I wanted to put some distance between when I read it and when he passed away because I knew I was going to cry through most of it. I did but it was inspiring and gave me a few great tag lines to add to my daily inspirational quotes. What a wise man. Worth the wait and worth the read. Better yet...get the cds and listen in your car on long commutes. I bet it would cut down on the road rage out there! Puts life in perpective.

So this is a relatively quick read because the whole time you want to get to the "good stuff" who does she choose and what does she have to do to get to her breaking point of making the decision. Well, this book doesn't have much of a plot, it's more of a married womans internal struggle of what the "right" choice for her is between two men. It had that romantic comedy vibe including the unrealistic small details that occur in relationships. But overall was a good novel because like Emily Griffin's previous published books she helps many women relate to her chracters.

This is a tribute to the classic nursery rhyme "The House That Jack Built." The words don't flow as smoothly as I would have liked, but the illustrations are stunning. It is a fun book with the added bonus of a recipe and glossary of the Spanish words used.

This was a life changing book for me. An English teacher loaned this to me when I was 11 and it converted me into life long reader. It was a book as up until then I'd never imagined, a pleasure to read instead of a chore. Of course, as a grown-up, 30 years later, rereading it again, it's not quite as good as I remember, but I still enjoyed it.
