This is a picture book that tells the true story of a tragedy at the Tokyo zoo in World War II. Officials, fearful that bombing would set dangerous animals free decided to kill the beasts. Only they couldn't use ammunition, since that was reserved for the war. They tried to poison the elephants, but the animals refused the poison. So the elephants were starved to death. It's an awful thing to consider.

The Vaults is a bit of this and bit of that. Bit of noir, bit gothic. There's, ostensibly, a mystery in there, but when it's revealed at last, it's not very whelming (neither overwhelming nor underwhelming). It's been a while since I've read this, so forgive me if my overview seems a bit thin, but then, if I recall, the book itself was a bit thin. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But I got the feeling Toby Ball was drawing from his enjoyment of various genres, as opposed to his experience or even impression of those genres. The difference being, of course, that each person's enjoyment is based on reason so personal as to be unrelatable in mere print. That's a very big assumption on my part, and I don't want to give the impression that The Vaults is not worth a wet weekend and several cup of tea. It is. But if you're looking for something with a lot of gristle and grit, you may want to pick up something else. Maybe you like black and white movies-- this feels like the book version of a black and white film-- and not because black and white is retro, or highly stylized. Just black and white because that's as advanced as the technology is. And if you think that's a horrible analogy, at least I can assure you the Vaults is better than my poor review.

This book was different and kind of hard to read at parts. The starting in my opinion was way to slow and it took him forever to get in the Colony. was this just a way to build suspense? I am not sure but it didn't do it for me!~ Luke

I very much enjoyed the premise of this book and the level of detail but was disappointed with the amount of repetition.
