Okay, so if this book was Sidney Sheldon at the top of his game, I'm definitely not reading any of his other books because I really didn't like this book. First of all, it was way to predictable. Even for me, who doesn't read a lot of mystery novels. So if you're one who loves mysteries and reads them day in and day out, save yourself the trouble and don't read this one, because a few chapters into the book, it's no longer a mystery. Another thing that annoyed me about this book was our two protagonists. Of course they're both very young and very beautiful, but on top of that they're incredibly smart and lucky. I mean, everything seems to actually go right for them when it's supposed to be going wrong. They manage to have a steady flow of cash on them, they can get a plane, helicopter, taxi, whatever, whenever they need it. And they're very one demensional too. I really don't even want to continue talking about the book because I disliked reading it so much. In summary, I didn't like the book because of the predictable plot and the shallow, one-demensional characters who really aren't real women at all but just some author's fantasy of what a perfect woman should be.

This was a recommend from a friend at work. I loved it! I'm actuallly surprised that I enjoyed something that was in the YA section! If you read this one, you have to finish the trilogy...I'm looking forward to the movie now~! Katniss is an unlikely hero...she seems to have the same weaknesses and feelings as any one of us, but is thrust into the hunger games when she volunteers in the place of her sister. She and Peeta (the male tribute) head to the capitol and after being immersed in the opulence and greed of the capitol, paraded about, interviewed and trained, they are thrust into the arena with 22 other tributes from the 11 other sections and are in a fight to the death to be the last one standing and the winner of the hunger games.

"I will punish him and escape from everyone and from myself.." The classic of all classics. I really like this translation - it was easy to understand, and the 40 pages of endnotes gave helpful and relevant historical information. I was most interested in Anna and Vronsky's relationship, although I didn't mind Levin's intense philosophical ideas too much. I felt sorry for Dolly and Karenin. I tried to hate Stiva but he's a likeable character in spite of his faults. I used to regard Anna as more of a heroic individualist, a feminist. Daring to break society's strict rules so she could go after what she wanted. But she becomes more pathetic towards the end, and the reader probably feels sorry for her (as I did). Her insecurity irritated me sometimes, and she played immature games with Vronsky that he knew nothing about. For example, when she told a servant to tell him that she was in bed with a headache, she thought to herself, "If he comes in spite of what the maid says, it means that he loves me still. If not, it means that all is over..." I used to think in that way when I was younger, but it was such a waste. Still, I regard Anna as one of my favorite literary characters. She is a miserably unhappy woman. She does not have her son, she doesn't love her daughter, she can't go out (while Vronsky can, of course), she has an overactive imagination about what Vronsky's doing. Vronsky says he cannot live without her, yet he is busy wandering about Moscow or Petersburg much of the time. She feels humiliated that she can't live without him. She "lowered herself" to be with him. I know women do this today, and it only ends up hurting, even killing, them. I wish some of Anna's so-called friends in society would have accepted her, comforted her. Instead, she retreats inside her mind far too much, becoming very irrational and unstable. To depend on one person for your happiness is unwise and unfortunate. Her inevitable breakdown has been forever immortalized by the last scenes and her last thoughts: "Where am I? What am I doing? What for?" P.S. This massive story of unhappy families is adapted very well by Masterpiece Theater (starring Helen McCrory and Kevin McKidd)

i never read this as a kid, but remember the movie being intensely creepy. now having read the book, i can only imagine i have confused it for some other movie about brats. the book is sweet, if corny, and boy howdy did it ever make me miss my little garden. how rude of me to move away just as my plants were coming into their own! btw, i've never said or written 'boy howdy' before, and i just had to try it.

I bought this book at the middle school book fair because last year, the seventh-grader I read with once a week finished this book with me, and it was a great triumph -- his first ever chapter book. I had read almost all of it in snippets, but I decided to sit down and read it one evening. It really is a wonderful option for the kids I read with at school. It's a chapter book about middle school, but it has a lot of drawings and good humor to make it comfortable enough for these students. Many of them are years behind in reading level, but this gives them a great place to gain confidence.

Did someone actually write this thing? Was this a grown-up who wrote this? This is so stupid... I can't even believe it's a classic.

I have loved every Michael Connelly book I have ever read, and although Harry Bosch will always be my main guy, this book was great.

I think what I liked most about this book was how hopelessly flawed Mamah was, but how the context of it was framed for the times, and what happened to women in the early 1900s when they made a decision, even wanted to make a decision, that was different from the norm. While I didn't have any vitriol for affair between these two, or why they made the decisions they made, I can see why some would feel as such. I was struck by how the book captured the idea of choices we all make to find happiness, the consequences of those choices, and whether or not any of us are worthy of redemption in the aftermath. It made me awfully happy to be a woman in these times, that's for sure.

I think people often forget how funny and dry the narration of this book often is. I spend much of the time reading it with a smirk.

I read this to Hannah and she loved it so much she wanted me to read it to her again as soon as I was done. It is quite different from the movie. I liked it much better than the movie and recommend it for anyone wanting to know the real story of the Wizard of Oz!
