4.5 STARS - Waking Hours is definitely one of Lis Wiehl’s best endeavors yet! I loved the story, and while I wouldn’t call it a fast-paced thriller, it’s definitely a thriller with a pace that keeps you reading. The plot line was enthralling with the way the spiritual and physical were interwoven. At times, I felt the author(s) intruded a bit in the story by having the characters randomly jump to conclusions that did not feel natural course of thoughts, and yet they were the right conclusions. However, this never detracted from the story for me. Maybe in a way, I’m glad they skipped some of the mundane things that drive me nuts in other thrillers (and invariably slow down the story). Altogether, very well done story. Definitely going on my shelf (after I buy the book when it releases) as I anxiously await the next book in the East Salem series! A disclaimer: This story actually gets between a 4 and a 5-star rating, basically halfway between the "I really liked it" and "it was amazing!" cues. **I received a digital galley in exchange for an honest review of this story.

I read this series of books by Nancy Turner backwards. I started with the last book of the Sarah Prine books in Louisville and ended with These Is My Words - the first book of the series. They are a fun read about the young woman Sarah Prine settling in the Tucson, AZ area of the country when it was the frontier. The books follow her throughout her life in AZ. Turner based the books on her own relative. I enjoyed the diary style and the interestign historic events that the author incorporates into each book.

I read this back in high school for french class. . .can't remember if I liked it or not, but thanks to Marco I'm gonna re-visit it this week =) Okay, so hmm. . .I forgot how totally messed up Mersault is. When I first read this I was pretty ignorant of the state of Muslims & Arabs in Algeria during the last century. It was interesting to see how they were depicted in this book, kind of like a gang of thugs. I'm not sure why but I pictured Edward Norton playing the main character, either him or Zinedine Zidane, post-WC headbutt. Very bizarre little man, detached from the world and unemotional . . . it was also interesting to see how dramatic everyone else is in comparison to him, particularly Marie and Raymond, and later on the chaplain - I could almost picture these people talking loudly with wild and exaggerated hand gestures while Mersault stood there without reaction. Ageeb (bizarre in Arabic)! I kinda want to go back home and dig out my notes from school to see what we actually were expected to understand the first time we read it in school. . .my guess is that our french teachers didn't care about our comprehension, rather our ability to recognize and conjugate the verbs found in the text =P Also, wikipedia classifies The Stranger as under the genre of "absurdist fiction" which I had never really heard of. Related to existentialism, absurdism is a philosophy stating that the efforts of humanity to find meaning in the universe will ultimately fail (and, hence, are absurd) because no such meaning exists, at least in relation to humanity. The word Absurd in this context does not mean "logically impossible", but rather "humanly impossible".

Great! Took me a long time which I liked, since it wasn't over with quickly and since it was good, I didn't want it to end. The way she tells the story is really creative and interesting

Lobotomy part was interesting and while I don't think the author deserved the procedure, I didn't think he was a very likable character...very arrogant. Of course, arrogance and personality could be attributed to side effects of lobotomy. Writing was dull. Just okay. Glad to know more about the procedure.

Blunt, hard writing, but it's really lovely in its harshness, and some of the stories are fantastic; the shortest is possibly one of the best short stories I’ve come across, perfect in its absolute sparsity.

I read this while I was 21 and bumming my way across Italy. Cliche or not, this book showed how nobody is really as detached as they seem. You have to read it like a performance piece. Just keep going. Going. Going.

Another war story that I really liked this is the story of war at sea "as it really is" the pain and horror shock, sadness and despair, love and romance. I highly recommend this for everyone.
