The dialouge was difficult to keep up with at times. I found myself going backwards to determine who said what to create the current conversation I was reading. That was frustrating. The guy is a real asshole too. It received really great reviews, but kind of forgettable for me.

A novel about Circus Freaks that blew me away, I loved this book and I couldnt stop reading it. It was fabulous, I havent read any of Katherine Dunn's other books, but I would be interested if anyone knows anything about her. Brillant!!

loved this book when i first read it because i was the same age as the main characters. it was very easy for me to relate to and understand the things they did and why they did them. After reading all seven, i realize that it's a very good starter book for the series, but still not my favorite of all seven.

the plot was well-enough-crafted to make it an enjoyable read, but the glaring historical inaccuracies ruined it for me. i also didn't care for the author's prose. he obviously knew nothing about roman 'estates' or the architecture of rome itself and constantly struggled with inept adjectives. he gave wildly inaccurate descriptions of the buildings and constantly mentioned things like shaking hands that just weren't done in that time. this is in addition to broad departures from the historical record, some of which he admitted to being deliberate, but many of which could have been corrected with the slightest effort at research. one example that really got under my skin was that he first describe the ceiling of the temple of jupiter as 'domed' and then as 'vaulted'. a quick review of any text on roman art and architecture would have provided a much more realistic description. the battle in rome almost made me put the book down because of its gross misrepresentation of the city's defenses and physical character. likewise with the voyage scenes. the sequel looks intriguing, tho, and the prose seems greatly imporved, so i might pick it up when an opening becomes available in my reading schedule. plus, the author's notes indicate that the historical speculation might be more under control in the later stories. i tremble to think of what he might do to cleopatra...

It's ok but nothing I am pressed about staying up to read all night. Again I am missing the emotional connection with the characters. The author tried and used words that should have done it but it was a miss for me. One part had it but only for a few lines. I know what is missing for me now. Harper is acting like a punk instead of a strong alpha male. And the author did not take the time to give you any background or back story so that you are not lost if this is the first time you have read a book from this series. Unfortunately that is the case for me because this is the first book I read by this author and I now know I didn't start with the first book. Later on at page 293 I just can't take anymore of this mess of a book. The author for the most part talked about a SKUNK from page 244-274 what in the world. I didn't know you could write that much about a skunk. I can't do no more of this book.

Gopnik really repeats himself a LOT. I was prepared to LOVE this book, and wanted to hear lots of personal details about Lincoln and Darwin's lives. The endless chapters on their speeches/writings just didn't tell me what I wanted to know. and he made rather grand assumptions about our familiarity with their writings. So it was just OK.
