Joe Vitale is an Internet Marketer among other things and I thought this was just going to be another "info product" that internet marketers make. Was I in for a surprize! The book was well written and easy to read. This should be savored and read over a period of time rather than at a few sittings. It's a very uplifting and motivating book that offers the premise that we create our own reality and highlights how to create what you want in your life instead of having a life of default. Joe answers the questions that naturally occur to you as you read and gives you a very practical life changing exercise in the last chapter. This is certainly worth reading.

Honolulu was one of my favorite books, but I had heard from other readers that Alan Brennert’s Molokai, was even better than the first book that I read of his. I was not disappointed. I loved this book from start to finish and appreciate everyone recommending this one to me! Rachel Kalama is a spirited little girl who captures your heart immediately. Rachel is living a typical life of a little Hawaiian girl- she has spats with her sister, she dreams of getting out of Hawaii, and she is beloved by her family. When a rose colored mark appears on her leg, her mother pricks her leg and finds that Rachel does not react. Rachel’s mother knows immediately that Rachel has leprosy. In fear of protecting her daughter, she covers the mark and hides other marks that appear on Rachel’s body. It is the family’s dark secret since all people afflicted by leprosy are quarantined and taken from their families. When Rachel’s sister gets in a fight with Rachel, she calls her a, “leper,” and the authorities are immediately notified that Rachel is suspected of leprosy. When she is taken to the clinic for testing and the results come back positive, Rachel is taken from her family and moved to the island of Kalaupapa, a quarantined leprosy settlement on the island of Moloka’i. Rachel’s life should be over, but it is just beginning. Rachel’s spiritedness pulls her through the devastation of losing her family as Rachel begins to find a new family among an unlikely cast of characters. She will capture your heart until the final page. This book was so unbelievably good and fascinating that I could not put it down. What should have been a book of heartbreak has you walking away with such positivity about the human spirit and its ability to overcome tragedy. I hope you will add this one to your reading list! Is anything seen, read, heard, or imagined equally part of the experience? Are all experiences relevant in equal measure across one’s lifetime? Does it matter, since time isn’t linear anyway? Why bother trying to change anything since everything has already happened and will always happen? If you’re so smart, why ain’t you rich? Is a barbershop quartet any more or less harmful than a quartet of guards in smoke-filled Dresden? Is it so terrible to be stared at, observed curiously, if it doesn’t hurt? Is it possible to only remember the pleasant moments in life? Is there any difference between robbing someone of their dignity as an act of love versus as an act of war? Could I have taken this book any more seriously?

Sometimes it's hard to tell if I'm reading because I like the story or I'm reading for the story--or, is there a difference? If I want to know what happens doesn't that mean it was a good book? So okay, this was a good book, then. Really good, except I figured out who done it and why with the mention of the "did it's" name. And yet, I always complain about surprise endings. So clearly, I'm hard to please. Great description, clear writing, vivid setting. Who knew Iowa (my mother's home state--she grew up in Hampton, Iowa) would become so real again for me. I've read both her books and will read more as they come.

Even though it's not strictly "foreign culture", I want to put it on my foreign culture. I could not relate to things and didn't like any of the characters, plot or setting. It was very difficult to finish this book.
